Whats everybody hunting this year?

I'm going after bull elk and muley bucks with a bow, and cow elk with a rifle. I'd like to apply for a moose tag and antelope sometime. Both seem fun to hunt.

I'll do some elk hunting this fall and perhaps muley if one of my family members draws out (I didn't put in this year).

Where are you thinking of doing moose hunting, RatherBe? The northeast corner of UT probably offers respectable pronghorn opportunities.

I run into a lot of moose up in the Uintah mountains while elk hunting and camping over the summer. The area is about 40-60 miles south of Evanston, Wyoming. I know a couple of spots in those hills where the big boys roam. Always see moose up there.

On a few deer hunting trips I've run into good pronghorn near the Colorado border a little north of Grand Junction. Think I'll put in soon.

I've put in for a rifle Elk and Muley hunt this year. I'm thinking about taking a trip into Idaho or Montana for a guided trip either next year or the year after. So if anyone's got some good intel on an outfitter for deer and elk in those states let me know.

Isn't their Roosevelt elk in your neck of the woods, PS350XLT? Have you ever hunted these?

Thanks for the info RatherBe. I have seen moose before during sometime I spent in AK (their all over Anchorage). But amazingly enough I have only seen one moose in the lower 48 (not counting yellowstone). I saw it from quite a distance not fair off from the green river (just on the UT side).

I'm familiar with the Unitah's, I'll have to take a trip up their sometime just see what is to be seen....

I've alway's hunted Roosevelt until this last year. I went over eastern OR on a spike tag hunt and got a Rocky Mnt Elk. They are a little smaller body wise but that spike was really GOOD eating. I've gotten a few Roosevelts in the past. They are typically harder to hunt but worth the time.

As for heading into Idaho or Montana, I've always wanted to go on a true wilderness hunt. Ya know, have a guide take you out on a pack string and either drop camp or maybe have a guide calling for you. Plus I really want to see that country over there. I hear it's really something to see.

Let me know Bitmasher if you do decide to visit the Uintahs and I'll show you around a bit. Bring your camera cause you'll see plenty of moose.

This year just for an attorney, for I reported an accidental elk kill in Colorado. I am left only with ks,sd, and Ne. Does any one know a good area for deer in South Dakota, hopefully near The Black Hills? Thanks. By the way I am still waiting for an attorney to be recomended.

Thanks for the offer RatherBe, I appreciate it. Probably won't be heading up there anytime soon though. Next time I'm planning to be in the area, I'll let you know, I would like to see some of these lower 48 moose. Wink

The few roosevelt elk pictures I have seen, PS350XLT, show they have a little bit different shape to their rack than a rocky mtn elk. Plus they appear to have a little bit longer fur. Is this true? I agree the rocky mtn elk are good eating.

Well ,bitmasher, I'm not sure about the hide so I could only speculate on that. As for the rack, I'm not sure exactly. I think they are typically a little smaller than Rocky Mnt Elks rack. But hopefully somebody else in this forum will know the real answer.
