Thanks for all the advice on my earlier post. I started my hunt on August 30, hunting mostly over the grain fields. I spent mornings and evenings in the ground blind, sweetened the field with apples, and burned the bear scent sticks. I even tried a predator call, and the farmer hauled a deer carcass off of the road in to the field edge. I hunted over a bait one morning, with no luck. (the baits were not available to me for the first 4 days) Both the friend with the baits and the farmer with the grain fields said the same thing, "the bears were here last week" they seemed to have given up the grain for the acorns up on the surrounding ridges, the bait for the surrounding corn fields. Finally, after 7 days of hunting, with 50+ hours on the stand or in the blind, I got my first bear at 6:30 pm on the 5th of September. He came in to the bait station, dead quiet, walking around and sniffing the air. I had both a honey burn and a scent stick going, and he walked right to the stick. One shot from the 30.06 and he ran 25 yards, death moan and that was it. Small boar, estimated weight 138 pounds. Not real big, but will be good eating. He looked huge walking in, but had "ground shrinkage" (had that happen with a deer once too)

That 'shrinkage' is something no guy likes to talk about. But congrats on your bear and definitely congrats on your patience.

Ate some for dinner...stroganoff recipe, over noodles..excellent, very tender. Tried it first before the fixins were added, and the meat had a sweet flavor, reminded me somewhat of duck breast. Wife and kids loved it too

Thanks again for all the tips and words of encouragement. I feel like I worked pretty hard at this critter
