What, when, and where was your first firearm?

Every hunter or shooter remembers his or her first gun like it was yesterday. For a lot of us, it was our gateway into the sport, or the sign that you had committed interest. So, as the title asked, what was your first firearm, under what circumstances did you receive it, and when did you receive it.

I'll go first, It was a Remington 870 Wingmaster 20ga with a 28" VR barrel, and a 20" smoothbore slug barrel. I received it for Christmas shortly after I turned 13, it was my gateway into serious hunting, letting me chase everything from rabbits, squirrels and turkey to whitetail deer. My gun cabinet has grown in a big way but that shotgun still fills a special niche.

Let's hear about yours

870 12g wingmaster. My dad owned a gas station and I had to sweep the whole parking lot three times a week for year when i was 11 years old to save enough money to purchase it. I still use it to date, 29 years later and fill guilty if i dont use it when out bird hunting.

Since I did not grow up in a "hunting" family, I wasn't introduced to hunting and shooting until I met my husband. So, one of my earlier gifts from him after we were married was a Winchester .243 Featherweight. That was 30+ years ago! Big smile I still have that gun and have bought many more firearms over the years.

Not only have I used the .243, but our kids did too, and now we'll most likely pass it on to our grandkids to use.

Boy you really know how to hurt a guy! My first was a J.C.Higgins single shot 16ga shotgun. It had a plastic stock and fore end, not comp, real homest plactic, brown. There was a plug in the but to fill it with sand for weight, I filled mine with a fine mixture of foulr and water!

I think I was 15 at the time and was a bit disappointed as I really wanted a Savage 99. But the step dad was not a hunter, not even close. That was almost 50yrs ago. BTY, I have never owned a Savage 99, don't know why! As a kid I had a small plastic model I hung on the wall by my bed.

I guess that I'll make a few of you a little bit envious. My uncle gave me a Savage Super Sporter in 30-06 when I was 5 years old. I even shot it a few weeks later although I don't remember the outcome of weather I hit the target or not. That rifle has been my pride and joy since then. I had watched my uncle take a flying swan, and an elk with it back in the 50's. It is the same rifle that I took my first deer with along with a nice 6x6 elk, and a 9 1/2 brown bear. Now days it sits with honor in my gun safe until I take it out every 6 months just to give it a unnecessary cleaning. The barrel was shot out a long time ago and I thought about re barreling it to a 25-06 at one time but decided against it. I have bought a lot of other rifles, shotguns, and pistols since that day in May over 50 years ago but it is my pride and joy and always will be.

A little tidbit for Don, I have my fathers Savage 99 in 300 Savage. I couldn't start to tell all the hunting stories that go with that rifle and strange as it may seam I have never fired it. It sits next to my 30-06.

Hey critter, you may have missed the target but I suspect you hit the ground! Laugh

I was six years old when santa left me a marlin model 60 18 shot 22. 41 years later he has a lot of friends and will still unload in about 15 seconds.

I didn't grow up in a hunting family. It wasn't untill I had this one girlfriend I was getting into trouble and her father bkinda took me under his wing and took me duck hunting. At first I wasn't shure if he just wanted to get rid of me because he made me walk first Evil! . but after that duck hunting experiance I was hooked on hunting. My first gun was a SKS for deer. I got this gun because it was a relibale cheap gun that was good for deer. I have taken 11 deer with that gun including a 10 point that wieghed 227 field dressed.

Well the first gun I don't remember. My dad bought a Rem 742 in 30-06 but did not want to get rid of his old 760 in 257 Rbt's. He gave it to me, I was all of 1 or 2 at the time. He was a working class guy witha wife, 3 kids and a morgage to support, extra guns were not in the pitcher at the time. Mom did agree I would need a gun though.

First that I remember was a Savage Modle 27 single shot .22. Got it for Christmas when I was 10. I cannot even come close to guessing how many rounds I have put through that gun? I am now 45 and that modle 27 still pulls duty buy the door keeping unwanted visitors out of the bird feeder and chicken coop. I will also take it on walks with the dogs every now and then and try to take a cottentail or two with it for dinner. It is basicly just 2 pcs of wood and a barrel but I do love that gun.

first gun

Mine was when I was about 11years old. My grandparents purchased me a NEF Pardner 20ga singleshot. I still have the thing but its sporting a synthetic adjustable stock and ghost ring sights. I still have the original wood but its too short to shoot it with it on.

My first gun was a H & R 12ga, break open action. It kicked like a mule.
