I hunt in Tenn.
opening day [Sat] of rifle season I am sitting in the edge of a wind row on the side of the field maybe 130 yards from the end of the field- this 6 point comes out about 100 yds away-well [using my 30-06 with my 30 yr old scope] I sight him in shoot he jumps stops etc and 4 shots later he walks out of the field-
I went and bought a new Leupold scope sighted it in was back in same spot that afternoon the same deer came up out of the same place he went into and the 5th shot [I call it that] he went down for the count

but I can't complain I got my moneys worth out of my old scope!!!!

It is the same gun and scope that I took my buck at 542 paces the year before-

NYArcher,

Is there good public hunting land out that way? I am looking for a place to hunt NY. All of our border towns are private land and it's virtually impossible to get permission to hunt it. What's left of it that is... everything is getting developed.

If you would be comming into NY using RT 20 than I would head North to Chery Planes, There is some state land their that can be hunted, Also in Albany we do have state land but this land is bow only.

I used to hunt Cherry Planes when I was a little boy with my father. It was private land we hunted. It is all developed now. It's really sad to drive out there now...

NYarcher,
The setup I was talking about in the PM I sent you was for another person to go along with me. I dont want a full camp (I bet the guide wouldnt mind). I am in Argentina now but when I get back if you are really interested I will talk to the guide and maybe hook you up directly with him.
Send me a PM with your email adddress and we can talk abouit it.
BigE do the same and I will give you more detail. I am interested in keeeping it low key as there is only enough room on the mud boats for 2 or 3.

Alberta Whitetail.

I figure that better late than never.
I joined not to long ago, and I am just starting to go thru the website, and get the feel for everything. Great site!
As a big game outfitter and guide, I see a lot of big deer, and I very rarley get to shoot one myself. Last fall we had a 2 day break in between hunters coming in, so we went out for ourselves. The first day we saw 5 - 8 bucks that would go high 150's Boone & Crockett, and a couple more pushing mid 160's. We even saw a couple of real nice bull Elk, that we passed on.
The second day out, we came into a clearing, and I spotted a good 5x5 buck at about 225 yards. I could see he was real tall, and had good mass. I figured that this was the buck I was waiting for.
I struck him good in the lungs with my 165 gr. Hornady SST out of my .300 Win. magnum. He dropped almost instantly, and never got up. This Alberta buck gross scored 175 B&C, and netted 173 to make the record books.

The next morning, I guided a hunter from Florida to a huge 204 non-typical Whitetail. We got some snow overnight, and the deer really started moving. My hunter took this next buck at 115 yards out of one of our heated deer blinds. I gave a couple of grunts, and the rest is history.
The buck also had a typical score of 189 Boone and Crockett. Either way, he makes the book.

I hope you guys enjoy the pictures?
