Living in NJ all of our gun hunts are shotgun or muzzleloader I have been shooting winchester supreme with partition gold bullet with pretty good results. What are you shooting in your slug gun?[/b]
Ive shot the barnes expander...it is pretty nice.
I always use remington rifled.
Switched last year to Lightfield Hybred EXP Very good grouping at 100 yds
2 3/4 shells
Velocity 1454ft/sec
muzzle energy 2564ft/lb
weight 1 1/4 oz
I hav'nt shot a slug in over 20 yrs, but I remember using remington rifled slug
and I don't care what anybody says slugs will do darn fine job of taking down deer within 150 yds (maybe thats why there are only 5 in a box compared to 20 for rflle
)oh ya, they do make a nice hole
I also shoot Winchesters Partition Gold Supreme sabot slugs. I tried a few of the other ultra premium brands from the various mfgs. (Remington, Federal etc.) and the Winchester brand worked best for me. It has a factory claimed velocity of 1900 fps which translates into a very flat shooting slug, (relatively speaking). I feed 'em into my Benelli Super Black Eagle with a 24" rifled Benelli slug barrel.
I find the best ever slug made for the 12 guage is the challenger 2 3/4inch magnum cutter 1819 f/s best ever anyone in canada that can get em should try em
Check out the new Hornady SST slugs. They claim to hold a 2 inch group at 100 yards, and are capable of 200 yard shots. I just bought some (really, really hard to find) from Cabella's through mail order. I shot a real nice group at 100 yards it was approximately 1-1 1/2 " group (no excuses, but trying to sight in new scope). I was having a hard time getting good results at 200 yards. (quite sure shooter error-FYI, don't shoot a .458 mag before sighting in your shotgun)
Anyway check the new round out at http://www.hornady.com
Anyone that has checked out thise board should check out this site i was reading it has almost all the slugs of todays choices.
I've taken several deer with Federal saboted Slugs. Virtually all dropped in their tracks. I've tested a number of saboted slugs in my rifled Deerslayer and they all shoot to the same point of impact. Frankly, I don't think a deer will know the difference from one slug to another. I've recently switched to Hornadys, primarily for the increased range as you never know when you'll need it.
Winchester BRI sabots if you have a rifled barrel they shoot like a bench rifle
