what type of projectile can be shot from a smooth bore....

out of a smooth bore barrel? im not use to using this shotgun and it has a smooth bore and i was just wandering what type of ammo can be shot from this barrel in order to sufficiently kill a deer? 00 buck, slugs? i always thought smooth barrel was jus for birdshot, but i heard it can shoot other things that will kill a deer? also, do i need a choke on my gun when shooting this type of ammo, or will the smooth bore with no choke work alright? thanks alot for your guys help, it appreciate it.

I would not recommend buckshot. It will do the job at close range but it is also responsible for a lot of wounded deer everyyear. With the smooth bore you should look for rifled slugs. There are many varieties and you willneed to test a few in your shotgun to see which ones provide the best accuracy.

Slugs usually work best in a shotgun with an open choke or improved cylinder.

What are you using for sights?

markwa is absolutly correct. improved cylinder is the best choke for shooting rifled slugs. and remember dont buy sabot slugs cause there for shotguns with rifled barrels. MAKE SURE YOU BUY THE RIFLED SLUGS!! and if your gun is capable of shooting 3 inch shells use the 3" instead of the 2 3/4". 3" has alot more spunk then the smaller ones....good luck Thumbs up

thanks....

ok so i can shoot the rifled slug out of a smooth bore. i must have a choke on it right, or it will screw up my threads? ok i didnt know that, so i might just be able to shoot the rifled slugs, b/c i would rather use the slug than the buckshot , but i was just under the impression that only buckshot can be shot from a smooth bore, but i am learning that isnt true. thanks alot for any help you guys give me, it helps alot.

Just buy an improved cylinder tube and screw it in.

Sites.......what about sites? Are you shooting a scattergun with just a bead or do you have iron sights?

I think it's the same for MD. They should discontinue buckshot.

geterdon
You can shoot buckshot through a smooth bore don't shoot it out of a rifled barrel since the buck shot will go straight out and be kind of tough on the rifling over time.
Also like Redrider says make sure buckshot is leagle to hunt with and like Makwa says be sure you are darn close if you do use it.

A rifled slug out of a impv cyl choke is the way to go unless you do need to buy a new choke tube then (if it was me) another option is to buy an extra long rifled choke tube. With this set up you can shoot sabot slugs and improve your performance. It might not be quite as good as a fully rifled barrel but will be better than a total smooth bore.

Cost may be a factor with you and sights have been mentioned here. If all that you have is a bead at the end of your barrel you will want to also find a better sight set up if you are going to be shoothing sabots (though it will work ok for a smooth bore with rifled slugs?). Depending on the make of your gun you can get scope mounts that attach on the side of the reciver and are easly installed and taken off. If all you are going to be using the barrel for is deer hunting get a good gunsmith to install some decient fiberoptic sights or a cantoleaver mount.
