What shoots best rigyht out of the box ?

Browning a-bolt,Rugar,Remington.
I need to buy one in .243 in a hurrry. I once had a Rugar that shot great in .243 but then it went south and I never could get it to shoot again (fluke?) Think

Well, I've sighted in quite a few over the years.
I'd say Remington & Ruger are in a tie for # 1. I had to do more glass bedding on Brownings to tighten the shot groups with new rifles.

What type of accuracy are you looking for? Sub MOA @ 100yrds? 1"@100yrds? 2"@100yrds? Trigger pull has a lot to do with it too. Also how the gun fits you has a lot to do with it too. Accuracy also has a lot to do with how well you shoot to begin with, for some reason many shooters tend to overlook this fact. Of the brands you name, all three are great guns from good manufacurers. I've shot and owned rifles made by Remington, Ruger, and Winchester that all shot very well with my specific reloads.

I don't think you can go wrong with either make you named, but I'm sure someone here will read this, flame-out about a bad experience they had with either and choose to disagree with me.

None of the above. If you the best out of the box accuracy it will come from the Savage but as far as your choices above it will depend on the type of firearm/ barrel/ stock that you are looking for. I like remingtons and they shoot great but I will not tell you they shoot better than the other two you wrote down. The savages are the most consistant out of the box rifle out there and at a fraction of the cost of your choices. They may be worth a look.

My Browing .30-06 with BOSS was very accurate out of the box. I had an Oregon Master Hunter help me sight it in and he was very impressed. Like many of you, he has the proverbial room full of rifles and game mounts -- not an easy guy to impress. It took us about three shots to sight the gun in at 100 yds. Tight groups out to 200 yards. I played with the BOSS just a bit and got the groups even tighter. Very effortless.

With that said, Remington has always had a good out-of-box reputation. I just don't believe you're going to see much difference with any of the top brands. They all make a fine product that will serve you well.

My advice is to base your purchase decision on other factors (value, cosmetics, dealer, etc.) rather than out-of-the-box accuracy.

Good luck.

I'm with Chester Golf on this mone. Seems like you have to work on a Savage to make it shoot bad! Even with the old triggers! Of the ones named, I'd think any would be fine. Seems like you get a rifle shooting best you can and sombody else tries it and out shoot's you. I've had only a couple bad shooters and both were Remingtons. But I've had and still have some great shooting Remingtons.

Weatherby with its accuracy guarentee and sub-moa line (sub 1" at 100yd, although tested at 0.75" at the factory) will give a savage a run for its money.... A typical weatherby vanguard (howa barrel) will cost about the same as a savage.

Nothing against savage, but weatherby is coming along.

I've had 3 savage 200's in .243 in the last 3 months and NONE of them would shoot worth a darn ! I also bought A Remington 750 IN O6 and it also shoots patterns not groups. I tried three different scopes on each gun and 4 different brands of ammo plus some handloads in the .243. I also sent both to the factoy, the 750 had a cracked forend and the savage had a case blow. Both were checked for accuracy and came back with good factory groups. Yesterday I put a Leaupold on each rifle and shot again with 4 different brands of factory ammo. Same result.!( 4-5" groups) So I give up Brick Wall,)
Last night a Browning guy looked in his warehouse for me and found an A-bolt hunter in .243 (only one left) as they are not making the new hunters in .243 win.
I'm thinking of going for it ! would you ? I'm not a bad shot, probably average but I can shoot bottle caps at 100 yds with my browning LWT carbine with wood stock and no boss in 06. The same with my blr81 .358 I had Remington 700's that would do the same. I did handle a A-bolt hunter a few years ago and it felt good but I've never shot one.
I need a .243 asap, this is going to be my last try as I just caan't afford to keep trying. Brick Wall,)

Forgot to mention group size. Right now I would be very happy with a .243 that would shoot 1" 3 shot groups at 100 yds.Is that expecting too much ? Some I've had in the past would do a lot better with NO tuning I can't remember why I got rid of them. Brick Wall,)

Have a buddy who's .243 Win in a Savage and that rifle consistently groups 1"@100 yrds with a box of reloads that weren't even loaded for that specific rifle.

This talk of rifles that wont shoot for crap. If you have a rifle that wont print a good group....clean the gun as best you can ....twice. Buy a can of Sweets 7.62 copper solvent. The foulest smelling ammonia based copper solvent, scrub your bore with that and you will see copper fouling you thought you cleaned. Blue mess on white patches...you will see it. Do that twice also.

I had a 700 in .06 go from 2.5 inch groups to 1 inch groups, a sendero go from 1.5 inch groups to ragged 1 hole groups.

Guns dont generally " go south", they get copper embedded in the rifling and grooves, ruining accuracy...especially in the higher velocity smaller bore rounds.
