What rifles for the elk hunt this year?

I bought a .45-70 govt this year with the intent that it would be my #2 rifle. I hoped it might even become my #1 goto elk rifle.

After a fair amount of shooting and practice this year I am still far more confident with my 7mmRM and my .30-30.

All of these guns are lever actions.

Now that is quite a combination. A bolt action Sendero in 300 Mag and a pump action 7600 in 30-06. Both certainly adequate just a strange 2 rifle mixture with one being a back up. I'm just courious how that came about?

Tim-

I realy don't think that there is a more effecient rifle out there for killing elk than the 338 win mag. I'm wondering if you've ever tried the 250 grained bullets. I acquired a win mag some months ago and am probably going to start reloading for it. I don't know that I need to b/c the factory stuff is pretty cheap and accurate enough.

I've heard a couple of african PH's state that the 250 grained bullet is the best way to go on African plains game, and I was just wonering if you had any experience with it on elk, I imagine that the 225 is a bit flatter and has plenty of penetration for elk.

This year was a .54 caliber Hawken. Other years, I favor my Browning 308 with Federal High Energy 180 gr. Noslers, or Winchester SuperShadow 325 WSM with 200 gr. TSX handloads. As you'll hear ad nauseum, anything between .277 and .338 diameter that shoots well for you works just fine.javascript:emoticon(':thumbsup1:')

For hunting Rocky Mountain elk anywhere east of the Cascades I use a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight 30/06 topped with a Leupold 2.5x8 scope. For roosevelt elk found in the dense woods on the westside of the Cascades I primarily use a Marlin 1895 Guide Gun in 45/70 topped with an XS Ghost Ring sight.

I'll be using my remington model 700 in 300 win mag with the 180 gr winchester power points.

I have never tried the 250 grn bullets. I am not sure how i ended up on the hornandy heavy mag in 225 but it has worked. If i ever try for moose i might try the 250's.

is there really much of a differenece between the 225's and the 250's? I am sighted in with the 225's.
