It is kinda of interesting how many WSM have showed up on this list.

I have both a 300 WSM shooting 165 TSX and a 270 WSM shooting 140g TSX.

Most of the time I shot the 270WSM and just leave the 300WSM behind the truck seat as a back up gun. The 270WSM shooting a 140g TSX at 3300fps is more than powerfull enough.

Huntquest= I guess you either take really long shots, or you really like to make sure the deer is dead. Big smile

My bad. I asked the same question on the deer forum and got confused... getting more typical these days. A 300 mag certainly makes more sense for elk than for white tail. I just don't understand why some people shoot white tails with 7mm mags and 300 mags. It's understandable if you're taking really long shots, or if it's the only rifle you have, but it seems like you're just waisting meat otherwise.
I like shooting big guns on all game, but if I'm shooting deer, I'm using something like a 45/70 or a 35 whelen... nothing a magnumized speeds.

Back to the elk thing... I rigged up a submoa 300 weatherby with a huge Leupold scope and a bipod mount several years ago thinking it would be an ideal elk gun. The sucker weighed too much and I realized that I really never shot at anything much past 200 yards. So, I got a 350 remington mag in a remington 673 guide gun, and I haven't ever found anything better for elk, Although, my new 35 whelen should be pretty nifty if I go this year. Think

Like huntquest, I shoot a .300 Win. Mag. It's a Weatherby Vanguard, natural wood stock, with a kdf on the barrel. Redfield Widefield Illuminator 3x9 scope, thumbhole sling. I nicked named it AT&T, because it reaches out and touches em. Big smile I own a few other rifles but I hunt with this one, for all big game and also that unfortunate coyote that I run into. As for wasted meat, I try to place all of my shots into the ribcage and do my very best not to hit a shoulder or Back bone, just a clean double lunger.

Missing that shoulder really is key. That's a good point. I hit one with the 300 weatherby (vangaurd stainles sub moa) a little high on the shoulder, and it literally blew a grape fruit sized entry and exit wound out of the back and top of that sucker. I guess he didn't feel any pain. The cal really does "reach out and touch them", as you said. It holds its energy almost as well as my 338 win mag and shoots a couple inches flatter out at 300 yards... like I said, it's good for the big stuff at long distances, but on anything smaller than elk, I'd think you would almost want to load it down to slower speeds with heavier bullets...? Think
