Hi Chuck!

a roe is a small deer , most common in Germany and Europe. Here a pic from a hunted buck:

Kirrmeister, that is a very good answer .... is that a black powder rifle? That critter looks to be about the size of a dairy goat. Maybe less than 100 pounds?

Hi Chuck,

the roes have much less than 100pds. This one had 38 pds field dressed. The biggest bucks here in Germany bring about 45-48 pds. But we have also bigger game like reddeer, chamoise or sika.

You are right, the gun showed is a bp, better ml rifle. I took the deer with it at about 60 yds with a 370 grs maxiball, cal. 50.

Red Deer or sitka could be interesting. Maybe some day I'll be able come visit and hunt some. Have you ever hunted the USA? As you know we have a lot of good hunting here too.

It is an effective cartridge, that is for sure. It is reputed to give the effects of a 7MM Win Mag wiht out the recoil. I like 7mags. I have had experience with those in Alaska and Michigan no matter what the game or target.

I've got both a 7mm08 and a 338 federal and really enjoy both. The 7-08 shoots like a 243 but has enough power for anything up to and including elk sized game. The 338 federal has a bit more recoil, but it's not even comparable to my 338 win mag. I'd say it's a bit harder than a 30-06 or the like. Of course, mine only has an 18 inch barrel. It's a real killer and has equivalent energy levels to the 7mm but is capable of shooting heavier bullets. It's second only to my 9.3 and 35 Whelen in terms of medium bores.

I would highly recommend both, and as a true rifle fan, I'll suggest that you buy both.

I was tinking that the 7mm08 would be a better all around caliber (like .243 or .270) to where the .338 would be a specialized load. For instance .338 on hog, javelina or antelope could be counter productive but would be ok for elk, moose and other larger game.
Like you say the 7mm08 would be more versatile if a person could only have just one.

If you could only have just one, I suspose the 7mm08 would be the best choice.

I use my .338 win mag for everything. I can't imagine that the Federal wouldn't be a great all-around caliber. I wouldn't hesitate to use one on deer (took a buck last Saturday with my win mag -- bang flop)..........

But I agree, get them both! Thumbs up
