WW, you do recall the Marines are always looking for a "Few Good Men" ! But it only takes an Army of "ONE" . God I love that commercial.

I was watching a hunting program this morning that featured the .338 Federal in a single shot Thompson. The hunter took an Asian Water buffalo with it with one shot. They also showed it against moose, elk, bison and whitetail. It got some very high endorcements. Some of the demostrations were very impressive.

Maybe I need to stop trying to decide between .338 Fed and 7mm 08 Rem and buy both.

I have not heard the voice of a cranky woman since the last divorce in '03. I have toys that causes most females (and wifes) to have sudden and uncontrollable bowel movements! In other words it makes them s............. well you know!

Ummm question.... Wasnt the K98 mauser chamberd in 8mm??? I had one for a while and my WIFE shot it often (wife is 5 feet tall and around 115 pounds) The K98 is the ACTION that many people have built hundreds of rifles on. My 8mm didnt kick hard at all... Im just wondering what chambering you are referring to that supposidly kicks like a mule. If its the 8x57 that you are talking about kicking so hard then wow you havnt shot the big boys yet.

I think the 8x57 IS kicks only in these K 98 so ugly because of their stock form and the steel butt plate. iIknow very well that out of a hunting rifle it kicks not more than a .30-06.

Kirrmeister;

I agree. I have shot "sporterized" version and they were no problem at all. Actually they are rare but prized to most American gun collecters.

Yeah, with a proper recoil pad, all of the thump goes away on the Mauser....... Hell, I get 2,750 fps with 250 grain bullets out of my .338 and it isn't bad at all to shoot. Don't even get me started on my .416 or my .450 Ackley......LOL!! lol Laugh

Chuck, I was one of those few good men!! And I think you should just get both calibers!!

My brother and I have had this argument going on for years. "Why are the marines always looking for a few good men but it only takes an army of one?" The truth is I started to go with the Marines, but due to circumstances beyond my control I went in the Army. I never did make it to Europe or Germany but I would like to. I spent my time in SE Asia. There were a whole lot of good men there.

I think maybe your right about getting both. The 7mm 08 would be a good alternative to a .243. I don't think I would be very interested in trying 375 H&H or 416's. The squirels in Iowa aren't quite that big! The misquitos are though!!!

It's all marketing campaigns, Chuck! The military absolutely breaks down without team work -- so why an "Army of One"?? LOL! Laugh I respect that you served!

Have a good hard look at the .338 Federal -- that time a friend shot a feral longhorn and punched a fist-sized hole through the heart was with a 210 grain TSX -- I posted 225, but called the guy up to confirm. It's apparently a really comfortable cartridge to shoot. Keep us posted!

It is an effective cartridge, that is for sure. It is reputed to give the effects of a 7MM Win Mag wiht out the recoil. I like 7mags. I have had experience with those in Alaska and Michigan no matter what the game or target.

Hi Chuck,

so if you are interested in a roehunt in southern Bavaria come over next year. You have only to pay the costs of the journey and the german hunting licence (for non residents a 14 days permission costs € 15,-/ $ 25,-). You need your passport and the US-hunting licence of your state.
