What a Late Season Elk Hunt!

Hi Folks

I just finished up a late season elk hunt on private land. It was terrific! We got to drive around on a ranch the day before opening day. When we spotted a nice bull, we marked that spot and came back the next day.

Early the next morning, we returned to the site (in a heater truck cab) and the elk were still in the area, so we parked the pick up, walked over to the edge of the clearing, and I harvested my elk. It was a nice 4 pointer.

We drove the pickup over to the down elk, gutted it, and wenched it into the back of the truck. This was the easiest elk hunt I've ever had. I love hunting this way, even though it cost a few bucks! lol

I've been thinking of trying the YO Ranch in Texas, too.

This was a great hunt!

Congratulations, I'm glad you had an enjoyable hunt. I have to agree with houndchaserx that this kind of hunt doesn't sound like much fun for me.

Wow! If I only had money, I could hunt like that. lol

But since I don't, I guess I'll have to get use to going to the bottom of deep, dark, canyons to get my elk and haul it piece by piece out of it.

I would also have to agree with houndchaserx across the board. I had a premium bull tag in AZ this year and spent 7 days of leaving before light getting back to camp after dark....and came up empty handed. But I wouldn't have had it any other way. Congrats on the bull, but you owe it yourself and the game to get there and do it the right way.

There's something to be said about hunting the "old fashion way," and having done that for years, I think my first elk cost me about $150,000 dollars, for the old fashion way. This private land hunt was much more fun and cost effective.

Here's why:
By the time I bought my 1st horse, $200, 1st Saddle $250, Boots $300, horse trailer $4000 and 1st pickup truck $30,000 (to haul the critter), and 1st home w/pasture (for the horse) $110,000 (1985 $$$$s), plus the feed bill, I'd say that a private hunt is about the cheapest way to go.

Plus, after I get an elk down, I don't want to go back to hunting rabbits 'only' again. The work is much easier when you can drive right up to the down animal.

So, you can see I've been on both sides of the fence, so to speak.

PS Now that 1st horse has grown to 40 horses, and a million dollar facility. 6 employees, 2 John Deer Tractors, and lots of land to care for. But it all started with my $200 horse and my $250 saddle, and a do-it-yourself-elk-hunt. Oy Vey!

One of these days, someone's going to pull that "swollen tongue" of yours right out for being so disrespectful.
