What happen to the PA DEER Herd?

I have hunted for over 25 years in South Central PA. One thing is that the deer herd is shrinking fast here. What is the reason?

PA deer heard

In my non biologist humble opinion I think they issued way to many doe tags over the years.

This reduction in the deer herd is a result of a QDM policy by the Game Comission to bring deer numbers in line with food supply, reduce damage to the enviroment and produce more trophy bucks. Large numbers of doe tags are part of that process.

Defiitely don't see as many deer as I used too....however...I missed the biggest buck of my life last year during archery! so, hopefully we start seeing more trophys out there!

In the south central we have plenty of food for the deer. The predators like coyotes and black bear is doing some damage. I can say one thin the point restriction is helping if the genetics is there. And that is a big If. If you have small bucks breading your does you not going to get fawns that will produce big bucks. Killing does like the game commission wants does not in no way make the deer herd produce big bucks. The food is there. By corn, alfalfa, and the list goes on and on.

You never seen a farmer shoot his cows to have a bigger bull did you.

What happen to the PA DEER Herd?

I'm new to the board but not to hunting in Pa. Have been at it for nearly 50 yrs. Being new I am hesitant about posting my views on the deer situation in Pa. i'll speak of the NC section of the state cause that's where I've lived and hunted all my life.
The deer issue is touchy at best. How do you micro manage any part of the state/ where I live you'll not see many deer on public land anymore but 5 miles down the road in an area where a wealthy landowner allows no hunting there are many. It seems to me the GC has taken the attitude that they;ll just issue more tags for the areas that can be hunted and hope for the best. This resulted in deer densities way below needed in some places and never touched the over populated areas. That to me is a big mistake. It also seems as though the GC is using anterless tags as a source of revenue in lieu of getting the back tag rate hike they have requested. Another mistake...if deer management is their true concern why does a fee need to be charged at all for anterless tags other than to cover the cost of issuing them?
I also believe the GC has squandered their most valuable resource. that being support for them as an agency by the majority of sportsman in Pa. 20 yrs ago if you said something bad about the GC at a local saloon you may well get your clock cleaned...today I could get 1000 signatures in a few hours on a petition to eliminate the GC's deer management programs at the local shopping mall...their support bases has dwiindled...at their own hands.

Well I guess you all know now where I stand on the deer issue here in the northcentral part of the state. I'm not anti GC cause IMHO it would be worse without them. But I am against keeping deer numbers way below carrying capacity of any area. If the GC doesn't wake up there won't be a GC in well less than 10 yrs here in Pa.

I know one source of revenue that the PA GC can't rely on any longer. And I sincerely believe that there are a lot of other nonresident hunters such as myself who have just said forget it I'm not putting down $112.00 or whatever it is now to sit in the woods and see nothing. Speaking for myself the GC took all the pleasure out of hunting deer, at least where I hunted. IMHO 10,00 doe tags per season year after year in Perry county was way to many.

Pa Deer herd...

I have lived in SC Pa all my 40 years and have been in the woods long before I could carry a gun. I have never seen the deer herd so thin. Atleast where I live they are few and far between unless your hunting in peoples yards! I've seen 3 deer this whole archery season in the mountains! But driving home I see dozens in developments standing in peoples yards and driveways! Can't hunt them there! I too think the doe hunting is hurting the herd. But I think many deer are being pushed into unhuntable neighborhoods by development! Yes the deer herds in the mountains are paying the price! Do I have an answer...NO. Buy I'm not getting payed the BIG BUCKs to manage our herd either. They ask why we have NO youth hunters.....We have NO deer to keep then interested!
Their computers and video games produce more and faster excitement then them sitting in the woods seeing nothing!

Trying to tell the GC to Shame on You! issuing so many doe tags will just get this neener! from them.

This is what you get when you have a govenor that appoints people on the GC that does not hunt.
