What gun will you be using this year?

Honest question here, do you guys not have problems with meat damage using 270, 7mm, and 300 mags on white tails? I guess if your set up requires really long shots they're pretty ideal, but within a 150 yards those suckers just blow up deer in my experience. I shot a white tail with my 300 weatherby at ~190 yards a couple of years ago, and I swore I'd never do it again.

Last year I shot a 5pt that dressed out at 155ibs in the neck--no exit . he was roughly 40yrds +/- out. the bullet hit his spine, crushed two vertibre, found the bullet lodged in the rib cage, about 3/4 the down his side . the bullets were Federal 175 grn trophy bonded bear claw. ( a bit much, but thats what she likes to shoot Big smile Big smile ) there was very little damage done. the deer hit the ground extremely quick. Maybe I just got lucky, not sure.

Jackhammer- finally someone speeking my language. What velocity on the 400 grained bullets? Also, have you ever used the 360 grained 45/70 loads out of your Lott?

Jonesy-

That sounds like a fairly bizarre bullet route, but if you hit him in the vertebrae, it wasn't good luck that you killed him. What cal were you shooting? I know it was 175 graines...I'm guessing a 7mm Think

Winchester Model 70 bolt action 30-06. Remington Core-loc 150 grain. Simple accurate and plenty of take down power for the BIG ONE! Thumbs up

No rifles permitted in my County.
Encore .454 Casull pistol, or T/C Hawken .50 for regular season
T/C Hawken .50 for muzzleloader season
Worked for me in the past, see no reason to change.

Jonesy- if you hit a deer in the spine with a 7mm, I imagine that it doesn't take much luck to kill him. In fact, if you shoot pretty much anything in the spine with a 7mm, you're probably going to get a skunked bugger.

That said, if you weren't aiming for the spine and were just lucky to hit him there, then yes you are right, it was lucky.
