Re: What Gear for CO Backpacking Elk hunt?

Oh, something else to keep in mind in addition to my post above. If you do down a couple elk or even one elk you might "might" need to do some rough butchering of the quarters in camp, get that meat into some coolers for later processing. So yeah, you'll also need coolers. I don't think coolers are backpackable. That is unless you can get the quarters of your elk to a butcher shop in the nearest town for processing or storage, but make sure they have room available by making a reservation prior to your hunt. With you guys being from out of state you are going to have to find a cold storage locker, get that meat frozen for the trip home anyway. Just another thing to consider. I'd have a truck parked within walking distance of camp if it were me.

Re: What Gear for CO Backpacking Elk hunt?

The best gear is what you can afford.
Ive upgraded to some top shelf gear for weight savings and comfort but its costly.Kifaru LongHunter Pack,Western Mountaineering Antelope 5* Gore windstopper down bag,Go Light Shangri La3 floorless teepee tent,Exped Synmat. Im a big fan of Jet Boil PCS stoves,Katydyn Hiker Pro water filter, allen game bags,Garmin 400T gps,Cabelas-- Micro Tex, Legacy Fleece,Evolution packable raingear,MTP base layers,Silva compasses.
Ive used Cabelas gear in the past and its perfoms well, its just heavy. My days of 70lb pack loads are over unless packing out elk quarters.
I suggest visting Backpacker.com to look at their gear reviews. they test the s%$^& out of stuff.good info.
also check out Sage Creek forums,24 hour campfire,Bowsight.com,Elk Hunt .com,and do searches as there has been quite few gear reviews posted.
