What do you want from your government?

Great line. Deciding who can and can't do things like get elected to congress. And who is going to be the decider? Current right wing thought in a nutshell. "We don't like all of you so we think you shouldn't be allowed to be in office"

Western Hunter I have bad news. Two hundred years ago we already decided how we were going to decide these things and we wrote them all up in a piece of paper called the Constitution. Our system doesn't always work perfectly but mostly it's worked, for a long long time. If you hate America so much well good, leave.

They feel they HAVE to provide for everyone, which means redistributing what you and I have

That from the woman who complains about stimulous money for roads not going to her corner of the state.

Cowgal you must realize that people in places like New York pay far more in federal taxes than cows, and sending the money from their stimulous out to pay for your roads is redistributing wealth, don't you? You didn't go to public (socialist) schools did you?

I want my government to stop privatizing many of it's departments in order to by-pass the restraints set forth by our foundrs. I want my government to abolish the Patriot Act. I want my government to pratice and enact common sense legislation by ridding small useless laws that weaken bigger more useful ones. I want my government to set moral standards and qualification as to who can and cannot be elected to congress. Congress needs to be cleaned out and replaced with better moral behaving and upstanding citizens.

I agree! Thumbs up

I want a government that will absolve me of accountability for my life. I'm prone to make bad decisions, like riding a motorcycle without a helmet, storing a firearm without a lock, or not using a seatbelt. So I want a government that'll pass laws to keep me from hurting myself.

I'm also prone to make bad financial decisions, like getting into too much debt or investing in the wrong companies. If I do, I want a government that'll step in and prevent me from feeling the pain associated with those decisions. And frankly, I'm tired of greedy people who make a lot of money -- I want a government that'll teach them a lesson about greed, take their money from them, and give it to me.

But most of all, I want a government that will take care of me -- from cutting my cord when I'm born through covering my funeral expenses.

I'm tired of the chaos associated with making decisions, and I'm tired of the negative feelings associated with making bad ones. All I want is to give it all over to Mama and have her feed me, dress me, tell me what to do with my life, stop me from harming myself, decide what I watch on TV or listen to on the radio, and just generally make all my decisions and do all my thinking for me so I can live my life without accountability.

I love big government, because IMO there's nothing more American than bringing the lifestyles of upper-income people down to a reasonable level in order to give it to people like me. Sure, there will be those who complain and oppose this, but they're greedy, self-centered types that hate America -- the beauty of government is that it has the power to deal with such people.

Well you're in luck - I think this government is custom made to fit that bill.

Yes CVC Nanny-Obama fits the bill perfectly. Good post Mr. Simplot. It well illustrates the problems with that sort of thinking and the dangers therin.

You'all complain about government intervention except when it's you or your issues. I notice that line over there at the government trough, those are big corpratists and independent self reliant Ann Ryanders at the front.

The Free Market died in September 08 when big banks came on bended knee for a $700 billion handout from George W Bush. That's right, enough money for fourteen years of universal health care. We all love government largess, we just want it for different things.

And the largest social program begun in forty years? Uh huh, Medicare part D, thank you GW. ( and big pharma loved that no negotiations for drug cost almost as much as the insurance loby loved the way the whole program had to go through thier hands)

Cowgal still wants that stimulous money for the roads up in her part of the state. Expat is still cashing that multi colored government check when it comes. Heck I'll bet my buddy Ham Noi Bunny Boy gets a government check from some sort of government or another.

Hmm, wonder how many repubs have foreclosed on homes, charged up credit card debt, supported seat belt and helmet laws? Could only be dem libs I guess.

Sounds very noble and romantic when spoken from the pulpit. But, unfortunately when living in a society some structure and rules are need and mistakes will be made. We aren't in Utopia after all.

Some structure and rules are needed, for sure. But SoCo the key word here as you mentioned is "Some"

I'm a republican with strong libertarian views and beliefs. I'm not in the debt/foreclosure situation you describe, though I'm sure people from all walks of life and political parties are in that situation. No one ever said it was a problem unique to democrats. Further more I'm sure there are some in that same situation who are taking upon themselves to dig themselves out, without wanting help from the government. Whether they are dem or rep, it's a nobil effort and something they can be proud of later and have a hard lesson learned as well.

Stuff happens to everyone. Some by their own fault and some by just circumstance. The thing I look down upon are the people who don't care that they get themselves into trouble, and repeatedly do it, yet always expect to be bailed out by anyone willing to help. I don't care what political party you believe in, that kind of stuff really ticks me off. Americans should be able to govern their own lives, and take responsibility for their own actions, it's not a governments job to do that. Most adults I know are able to do that. Democrat or Republican, carry your own weight is all I ask, and try no to get yourself into trouble if you aren't sure you can dig yourself out of it. That's all I'm saying.
