What do you want from your government?

I want my government to provide for national security, but not engage in wars to bring democracy to other countries or to fight their battles unless it absolutely affects our security.

Build a strong military and defense system with our tax dollars.

I want my government to strictly adhere to the Constitution, including the 10th amendment. The federal government should only carry out the functions specifically provided for in the Constitution and leave the rest for the states.

I do not want my government just to cut taxes, I want them to cut spending so high taxes are not necessary. Tax cuts and spending cuts must go hand in hand.

I want a government that limits immigration and prevents illegal immigration. We have enough people in this country so we should limit immigration. Establish a guest worker program to provide necessary workers and to provide a legal way for immigrants to come and work here if they want and are needed.

I just wish they'd sort out the mess from the last 8 years.

Can't move forward until we've dealt with the past. Put criminals in jail and restore the rule of law. Unless we are a nation of laws all else is meaningless.

I'd disagree about spending more money with the military industrial complex. We've killed enough women children and little babies to last us a while.

CVC, I pretty much agree with everything you said. Government in my mind is a necessary evil needed to referee human interaction when they have reached an impasse and can't do it themselves. History has also taught us the importance of a robust military -- better to spend money to maintain it than it is to spend blood to catch up from failure to do so. History has also taught us that if we don't engage abroad early enough, a far bloodier war will find us anyway. But I think the determinant should be our national security. IMO, for example, we shouldn't have gone into Somalia and the Balkans because we had no significant interest beyond getting the pictures off CNN.

I'm also a big believer in the 10th Amendment, which seems to be increasingly forgotten by people who don't understand how our government is supposed to work. Most people don't realize the Civil War had more to do with the 10th Amendment than the 13th, or that it was a defining moment of federalism that took us from saying "The United States are" to "The United States is."

I also on't see anywhere in the Constitution where it says the federal government is the national nanny that's supposed to protect individuals from themselves, or that courts are supposed to legislate from the bench.

Expat, agree with you about the government not intended to be a nanny. Unfortunately, too many people, including intelligent, educated and hard working people do believe that the government is suppose to "care" for us.

Protect our rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That's about it.

That's about it for me too. Problem is that the left interprets this differently than you and I do. They feel they HAVE to provide for everyone, which means redistributing what you and I have!

CVC, expatriate, and Sage of the Sage have taken the words outta my mouth.
Sage speaks clearer and simplistic as it can get. I suspect that is what our founding fathers had in mind.

I want my government to adhere strictly to the Constitution of the United States as written by our founding fathers. I want my government to respect the people and the libertarian values practiced by our founders. I want my government to be smaller than it is. I want my government to stop privatizing many of it's departments in order to by-pass the restraints set forth by our foundrs. I want my government to abolish the Patriot Act. I want my government to pratice and enact common sense legislation by ridding small useless laws that weaken bigger more useful ones. I want my government to set moral standards and qualification as to who can and cannot be elected to congress. Congress needs to be cleaned out and replaced with better moral behaving and upstanding citizens.
