What do you spend on avg for hunting each year?

This year has been an odd year for me... as far as hunting goes. I took a Aug 1st hunt and have the ability to hunt about 30 minutes from my house. I've been hard at it since Aug 1st, making 3-4 trips out there a week. I've come up empty handed thus far, but I have a few more months to go.

I just bought my General Deer tag and my girl friends General Deer and Elk tag. I also bought ammo and I dropped $125!!! WTF???

So I got to thinking... I wanted to know just how much I've spent on hunting this year? I did some quick calculations and I've estimated I've spend close to $500 on hunting this year. That includes fuel and food used on scouting/hunting/rifle range trips, the cost of my tags/license and ammo.

I figure after all said and done, I would be into hunting this year close to $1000. I've still got 2-3 more weekend hunting trips planned.

I love getting outdoors, spending the time with my son/daughters, so I dont really think of the money as going to waste. I have had the thought.... If I eat my tag this year... I should have just bought a cow(beef) for $500 and called it good.

What type of budget busting have you all done this year?

that is one thing I don't like to keep track of. According to my wife too much but she understands my passion and puts up with is.

My biggest fear is that when I die my wife will sell all my hunting equiptment for what I told her I paid for it. Evil!

When you start to figure cost it is time to quit, but if you figure in the enjoyment factor then what ever you spend is cheap. I allow $15,000 a year for hunting 4 states with 2-3 animals in each state, all non guided that includes everything. Most of the hunts are either in a camper or tent but one is out of a motel room at $40.00 a night for 3 of us so it isn't that bad.

But then isn't that what retirement is for?

I spend $6-8K a year on food, fuel, guns, tags, ammo, reloading equipment, dog care, motels, camping gear and stuff like that. It's amazing how fast it goes.

I agree with you Critter... I know I'm going to spend quite a bit, but for me... regardless if I fill tags or not, it get everything back with the thrill and enjoyment of hunting alone.

One day, I would love to be able to spend that kind of money and hunt out of state, etc. It's on my bucket list. Thumbs up

Depending on your age you need to do what I did 35 years ago and plan for the future or your future hunts. I set aside $1000.00 dollars each year for 20 years into a mutual fund that is now paying me back to go hunting. This was in addition to what was going into my company retirement fund or 401K. You don't have to do as much as I did but depending on your family situation and money income try and put in what you can. It adds up in a hurry. I also bought a $100.00 US savings bond every payday just to sweeten the pot a little.

The thing is if you like to hunt you have to pay the price and you might as well save some during the time that you don't have that much time off so that you can do it when you have all the time in the world.

I try not to keep track. I use my holidays for hunting and banked overtime. I hunt from home. all of my hunts are under an hours drive away exept for moose which is five hours away but I stay with my wifes uncle and hunt from there. I reload for fun so this dosn't cost much. so gests gas and tags.
F.K.

No kidding, I cannot really keep track!

...I also agree that you cannot place a value on the time you spend out in the wide open spaces of this great country!
