what to do if bear walks up on you?

I was in the woods today scouting deer and a big black bear comes walking at a fast pace toward me. So I yelled at it. It looked at me and then took another step toward me and I took off.

What should you do in this situation? Should you stay still, yell, quietly sneak away?

What if it was a female bear with cubs walking toward me?

The rules are pretty simple:
Never get between cubs & Momma Bear.
Don't run, may trigger the bears prey instinct to chase you.
Bear has the Right-of-Way, if it wants to walk the trail, I would quickly(not run) yield the right of way, by taking a right angle detour.
Facing the bear and yelling is a last resort.
Bears have poor eyesight, he may have been as surprised as you
If the bear seems to follow you:
If you have a back pack with food in it, drop it and keep going, don't expect to get it or its contents back anytime soon

Wouldn't hurt to carry a firearm or spray in case of an emergency. You never know when you'll come across that bear with a mean disposition. May/may not happen, but better safe than sorry.

Step up and shake his paw!

Typically there are no problems in this situation. I would have stayed still to watch and if I had my camera I would have been taking tons of pics.

What to do

No problem. Only 1 black bear out of 100 will attack humans. Slight problem, is this bear number 1 or number 99? Give him the right-of-way. Don't play dead for a black bear. If he does attack, fight with everything you have. Nose and eyes are sensitive areas and make the best target. Bear spray works well. Also they don't like loud noises. Stand up, make yourself as tall as you can even by raising your arms high. In other words, appear larger so that you are dominant.
Back away slowly.

If its alone and in seasion hope ya gotta tag in your pocket. But back away slowly. Try to get upwind and drift your scent to the bear plus what they said about the arm waveing. That may be all it takes before it turnes tail. I can't speak from experiance as I've been after my 1st for 7 years and yet to see a live one out of a zoo. But thats what 99% of the books and videos say to do.

I met face to face with a large black bear while I was deer hunting a couple of years ago. I was coming around a sharp corner on a trail with the wind in my face and the bear was coming toward me looking away from my direction. Because of the sharp corner, we were only about 15' apart when we spotted each other. I stopped and got my gun to the ready and he/she raised briefly on its hind legs to get a better look at me. I waved my free hand and yelled but the bear stayed put so I yelled and jumped toward it and it made one leap to the side and crashed through the bushes. I think what you do depends on the situation and every situation will be different. You will learn through experience how to read body language and assess the the situation accordingly. Mine turned out well, but I was fully prepared to empty every last round I had in that bear if I had to... tag or no tag. I had already tagged a bear that season so I didn't have a tag but I would have dropped it if need be. The key is not to trust any wild animal, especially one capable of making a meal of you.

My hunting partner and I were on a deer hunting trip in Lilloote bc we stoped in Goldbridge at the local bar for a beer before heading back we struck up a conversation with one of the local natives there he sugested we take the hurley river road across the other side of the dam thus saving a considerable amount of time and miles from our trip back so off we headed , we crossed the dam ok (room for one vehicle only no guard rails )but the other side was just a donkey trail it was very rough going with my 3/4 ton gmc with a camper on but we made it to a better road at the top after about a ten minute drive and crossing a few streams we hit the hurley river road good gravel well after a mile or so i told my bud i needed to use the bathroom awful bad an this was a good a spot as any i pulled over to the side grabed a roll out of the glove box and walked back about 30 yrds from the truck one one side was a clear cut the other side the river was on had a bank about 8' to the bottom i decided to slip over the bank as it looked not to bad a spot , little did i know there was a good size black bear at the bottom witch i didn't see till i was sliding down when i hit bottom the bear was heading up i landed on my butt and got up in a hurry ,scrambled back up the bank looking for the bear i saw him going at a full trot across the clear cut when he got to the other side he stood on his hind legs behind a big tree looking back at me his head going from side to side I went back finished my business and headed back to the truck the bear at this time was long gone ! my buddy says what took you so long ? i said oh nothing but next time i need to stop remind me to "take along my rifle !! what to do if bear walks up on you?

I had an early season expierience with a black bear as posted in " Stalked and chased by a black bear". I posted it a few months back. All I have to say about Black Bears is Dont walk away Dont run away stay still and do as they already stated put your arms up and act as big as you can I would even yell as loud as you can, Something anything just yell. Again it happened too me this year twice but good thing the second big guy was on the other side of a pond because if he wouldnt have been I dont know what I would have done.

I decided to take my son for a walk one day, In a back trail around our house well little did I know the only pond on the walk was going to have a nice size boar trying to drink out of it. Well he looked up at me and my son in particular, and started high tailing around it right for us. All I could think is what to do with my son if that bear caught up, but he didnt, I threw my son on my shoulder and ran like lightning to the first house, you can bet I was gonna run right in the front door. That bear was far away so I knew if he was comming he would have to catch up. I wasn't risking anything with my year old son right there with me.

And for those that dont know this Black bears are the most predatory bears in the bear family. if thier hungry and your there in front of them and its that one bear outta 100 guess what's gonna happen. The best thing to try is make em know whos boss. That's if you dont have one of your children with you Brick Wall,) .
