What to do with the heads?

My dad farms and was combining beans and saw a buck lying dead in a waterway. He called me so I went and found it. I don't no how long it was dead. Long enough to have next to nothing but bones. He is a big 10 with a single drop tine so I want to do some thing but what do I do? He has some fur on the side of the skull and is rotting. How do I take it off or do I just cut the antlers off the top. Thanks for the help.

i would say just cut a little bit of the skull under the antlers but keep it conected to the antlers and let dry for a while.

If you want ot keep the skull for a European mount, simply put the skull in boiling water. Leave it boiling until all of the tissue is soft (probably around 45 minutes.) Then take a wire brush and clean off the skin and soft tissue.

might wana see if you need to get a permit from the dnr to keep it first. In Indiana you would need one.

skull

If you don't want to boil it, letting it sit in water works as well. Not as fast as boiling, but it will still take the skin off. If you have a power washer, that works well after you've had it soaking for about a week.

It's a shame he had to go out

It's a shame he had to go out that way. You need to check with the DNR and probably get a special permit. In another year he would have been a very nice buck. I agree with the other guys though, a euro mount would be very nice.

If you still have fur and

If you still have fur and flesh on it dig a hole in your yard and throw it in there, and cover it up. Leave it there for a month or so and check it, I've thrown an entire head with the cape in the ground and after 3 months it was clean. anyway did it back up wash it off spray some peroxide on the skull and leave it in the sun.

Prolonged exposure to water

Prolonged exposure to water weakens the small bones of skull. If you are going to boil it I would only do a very light boil and not for very long. Euro mounts are easy and turn out very cool.

Anyone ever seen the metallic

Anyone ever seen the metallic look that is being done now?  Never seen it on a deer, but a buddy had 2 bears done that way.  I'll have to see if I can find a photo

I have seen the metal skull

I have seen the metal skull that you insert your deer antlers into. I would never think about doing that to a pair of my antlers.
