Are you looking for a unit to put in for, or just wandering what people think is the best?

What is Colorado's Best TROPHY ELk Area?

1 and 201 are usually included in that group. I've never hunted them and never will, but they have the best reputation for trophy quality, despite the extremely low elk density. To me, its just not worth holding out for 12,15, 20 years or whatever it will take to hunt those units when you can hunt other very good unit/season every year or every other year.
Between 1,2,10 and 201, plus 40, 76 and 61 you've got great elk hunting, but they aren't so much better that I'd rather acquire points, and hunt elk during 2nd or 3rd seasons. I'd prefer to hunt other better than average units during 1st season most years.

Don't think I could have said it any better.

Colorado Trophy Areas

A lot depends upon how one defines trophy. If you are looking for 400 class bulls, Colorado is not the place to look. While there may be a few the numbers are so small that it doesn't warrant the effort. Look at Utah, Nevada, Arizona, or New Mexico. If you are looking for 360+ bulls there are many many places in CO that hold bulls of this class. If trophy means 300+, a little homework can get you into these bulls too.
Look at: 61, 76, 10, 741,771, 85,86,or 851. That should get you started.

GMUs 10, 2, and 201 get a lot of media attention, but the reality of killing a bull in one of these units unless you have a landowner tag and can avoid the draw, are slim at best. Just look at the stats and you will see for yourself.

We have a lot of free information on our website at: http://www.elkcamp.com. Feel free to stop by. If you have questions, I'm always available.

Good hunting.

You don't sound like you have a pile of preference points. If you don't, you have NO chance of drawing. Colorado is a preference point state, meaning that the people with the most points get drawn first. There are no tags for people with less than max points in these trophy areas.

Planning

I will be at the 15 point mark with this years draw and am thinking of cashing in next year. I have applied for the 201 (a.k.a. the preference point) tag every year for 15 years. I think I want to just hit a really good unit with a good outfitter and hopefully make it a once in a lifetime to remember. After all 15 points is half a lifetime of applying.

Anyone have any recommendations? I lived in Colorado for 11 years and did my own guiding, now I want to just relax and enjoy the experience even if it means a home equity loan.
