What caliber do you use for elk? Me, I've switched to a 243

Yes it can be done but why would anyone want to try it when you have the option of using a more apt caliber such as a 30-06 or 7 mag?

yeah it can be done but when you have the option of usein a 7 mag i mean sure it bucks but its not too big or too small and a 400 yards it only drops 14 inches. now look at this link and see the ballistics to a 7 mag and 243win.

I don't think I'd shoot an elk at 400 yards with a 7 Rem Mag, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, but I'd rather do it with a 300 Winchester Magnum shooting 180 grain bullets as fast as the 7mm throws 160's. I plan on buying a 300 Winchester Magnum soon, I want to see if I can load it the way I have the 7mm Rem Mag. Supposedly it will top 3130 fps MV with a 180 grain Nosler with the proper dose of H-1000.

I have shot elk at that range with a 7mag and it had the same effect it had on them at 150 yards, any time you consider a long range shot like that confidence and being familiar with the rifle make it a very possible shot but trying it with an inapropriate caliber make it improbable if not stupid.

Using H-1000 powder and magnum primers I've loaded 150 grain bullets to 3300 fps MV.

RS Jake; Enjoy your 243. I have seen many Elk Taken with one. Don’t let these other guys ruin your experience. Elk hunting with a 243 certainly makes more sense than some of the reloading quotes that are posted earlier!

I believe in hunting game with as many odds in my favor as possible and there's absolutely no need to accept unnecessary liability using a 243 Win, just to prove it can be done.

Hence, a 30-06 with 180-gr. projectiles or above is what's needed to improve the odds in a hunter's favor; this should be the general rule of thumb and not the exception, which a 243 is.

Too many animals would suffer with a 243 and it's cruel to have them suffer by intentionally using a smaller projectile that's mean for varmints / light-skinned game at best.

if the 30-06 is the bottom edge for moose there is no way a 243 should even be on the list for elk!!lol I would say the 270 is the bottom of my list for elk and the 243 is the bottom for deer, dont make this mistake, get urself an elk rifle!
