what age is too young?

for myself , my daughter has been fishing since she was three years old . she has been pheasant hunting with me when she was four years old , carrying a plastic toy shotgun also . she has been out on scouting trips with me for deer and elk walking in the woods . she has been to the deer camp every year but one , has not been out on a hunt yet . so the question about what is too young depends on the parents , the childern and wanting to teach them about the great outdoors .

My son...

My 8-year-old passed the Colorado hunter safety course this year. I enrolled him in a course for youth in Glenwood Springs. There was a whole group of young sprouts in that class.

My son has a rimfire rifle and he has been practicing. He has a tag for Merriams Turkey in Colorado this fall, and I am going to take him hunting. I will do the calling and my boy will do the shooting. We've already planned a big Thanksgiving feast just in case we are successful. His mom isn't particularly thrilled about the idea of her little boy killing a turkey, but she understands it. I wouldn't personally hunt turkey with a rifle, but for my son it's probably a very ethical hunt.

That should be fun! I hope he gets a chance to tag a turkey.

Hunter777, thanks! Me & the little man will have a great time together even if the turkeys are a no show.

what age is too young?

I took my daughter out deer hunting when she was 6. My son when he was 4.
My 4 year old went bear hunting with me too. they have been fishing since they were months old!! They just sat in they carries but we got time together.

I had such a good time with them.
My kids thougt it was great seeing the heart, lungs, liver etc. it was a great anatomy lesson.

I would see if the father could come with you on the hunt. We need to get more young people interested in hunting and fishing.

what age is too young?

My nephew has been going Antelope hunting with my Dad and I since he was 6, he just turned 13. His Dad enjoys hunting, but it's not a passion for him like it is for my Dad and I.

It has been a great hunt to get him excited about going. He got to crawl around in the dirt and has done a lot of great stalks with me This will be the first year that he carries a gun. We hunt about 1 hour from Denver so he was never real far from home. He should fill his tag this weekend, so keep your fingers crossed for him.

I have a 4 year old daughter that will be going with me next year. It will be a chance for her to get to play and hang out with Dad.

Anything that we can do to get more kids interested the better. Thumbs up

I was 8 when I first went hunting deer with my dad. My daughter is now 7 and has shown an interest in going with me on my hunts. Mama is ok with it, but I will have to wait until I draw another deer tag. Will not subject her to the riggers of an elk hunt just yet.

She has shown a little interest in fishing, but would rather throw rocks into the water than hold a pole. 'bout five minutes and the excitement of fishing has turned to rock throwing.

I could not agree more with most who say to let the kid's tell you when they are ready and let them try everything they want as long as its within reason. That's where mommy and daddy come in.

Well the way I look at it is, I was hunting at a young age , but it wan't for deer it was more like rabbits and pheasant. I think I started fishing when mom put me in the tub. I got kids now 11 and 17 and they have seen their share of time in the woods. My wife use to say she don't like my young fellow holding guns. I say it is better to have my kids comfortable holding a gun and learn what it is all about , and what it can do before someone gets hurt. We fish all the time too during summer vacation. Gets them off the computor too . My young fellow spends more time walking through the woods now because he is learning what enjoyment there is just getting out in the woods and away from everything else. They see all the hard work that goes into hunting big game with me, and I can't wait till the day he gets to shoot his first buck. Anyway I say it is time Big smile
