westcliffe, colorado elk??

Hi guys. New guy here. Love all the info on this site. Just found out that a hunting partner has relation that own a ranch near Westcliffe Co. And the good part of the deal is they are open to having us out there for elk hunting. So now comes the fun part of investigating the maps of nat. forest and the area including his ranch. We are open to whatever tags we can draw-bow, muzzleloader, rifle. Heck we would just like the chance to hunt Colorado. Deer ,elk, antelope. Doesn't matter. What are the draw chances in this area? Is it a good area to start applying for? Any help would be great. I have ordered the maps already. Going to check with the DOW later in the week . Thanks for any help you guys might offer. dave

Well....a great deal depends on the size of the ranch and it's location. Custer county planning & zoning has never met a subdivision proposal it didn't like. Basically, most (but not all) of the elk have migrated into the developments and never leave. They cover about 300,000 acres. You can find an abundance of elk in the area but most of them will never be hunted. If your friends' relatives' ranch abuts the Wolf Springs Ranch or the Mountain Meadows Ranch you might do well. The extreme NE corner of the county, the central Wet Mountains and the extreme southwest are your best bet. Lacking private access in those areas you better be tough enough to hunt the top of the Sangres or you aren't going home with anything but photos----not that that's necessarily a bad thing.
