Just pumping you locals for a little forecast. How has the weather been and what are the forecast for about 9000 ft on the western slope of Colorado. Leaving in a couple of weeks for the anual elk hunt. Last year was hot and dry didn't see alot of elk but, the bears were everywhere. I saw 18 from Friday to Thursday. One of my buddies managed to tag an eight year old boar that was a very nice looking bear. He was black as coal. I had a cinnimon with dark legs and a blond strip down his back that would of been close to 100 lbs bigger than Johns at 25 yrds but, no tag. sad

thanks for any info I my recieve

I looked into my crystal ball and it couldn't see out that far. I then checked my Indian Weather Rock and it said it was raining today, but had no idea for tomorrow. If I could tell what the weather would be that far out here in Colorado at 9,000 ft. I would will the lotto. So you may have to do as I do when I head out. Put the chain box into the truck along with the handy man and a shovel, pack your cold weather gear along with your summer clothes and head out. The best motto for up here is to plan for the worst but hope for the best.

LOL Big smile I did look at the weather channel and just as you said looked likes rain now and very good chances of snow next Thurs and Fri.

We always come prepared but, after coming out there for 14 years I like to hope for the worst. I hope we have to chain up and someone gets stuck 3 or 4 times. That keeps alot of pressure off the mountain and there seems to be more elk. Last year we drove 10 miles up the trail from about 7500 up to 8500 and never got out of 2wd. We had 12 hunters and did manage 6 elk but, shot damn near every thing we saw. I still can't beleive how many bears we saw.

My experiance in 14 years of hunting the area we hunt is:

Warm dry weather = good bear hunting, poor elk hunting

Cold, muddy, snowy weather = good elk hunting, poor bear hunting

I just checked the local weather and we're in for a winter storm warning up here around aspen colorado and surrounding areas. Things have been cooling off I'd definatly expect snow within the week in the high country. Where abouts are you hunting???

last week was pretty warm so its hard to judge this far out. Hopefully snow falls in time for 2nd rifle season.

Looking at the 10 day forecast, and assuming you are going to be here for first season, then fudging a little bit for the elevation (3 degrees per 1000 feet)...
So in Central Colorado, you've got a winter weather advisory, calling for 4-8 inches of snow in some of the mountains, then a series of precipitation events from Sunday through Tuesday, and since lows at the airport are forecasted to be in in the really low 30s, it should snow in the higher country. Then it will likely snow again thursday and friday (Oct 8-9), but that's as far as my forecast goes. So this should be interesting.

Thanks exbiologist, that is kind of what I seen on the weather chanel forecast. We hunt second season and it seems in the past that if there is snow right before or during the 1st season it keeps hunters off the mountain and we tend to have better success. It has never been bad but, there are deffinately some years better than others. I'm kind of hoping for another 2007 season.

What area are you hunting? It sounds like you are right out of my back yard. I live in Gypsum 7 miles West of Eagle. I wondered over a lot of that country a few years ago and did some archery hunting just to the West of Crooked Creek Pass up on Red Table Mountain. I'll have to keep an eye out on the weather for you.

Here is a link to a point forecast site. Just find your location on the map click on it and it will give you a 7 day forecast. You can zoom in pretty close and really pin down your location. http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=40.24389506699777&lon=-105....
