weapons for russian boar

Okay now if you had a choice of any weapon in the world what would it be out of these three types pistols rifles shotguns chose one of each. My favorites are for pistols a magnum research six shooter in .444 marlin. my favorite rifle is a .280 remington and for shot guns a youth model 20 gauge slug gun.

Sounds pretty good! I prefer a 5" steel for my pigs, but when I am using fire power I like the 300WM... a bit much though. I have used my trusty 222Savage and even a 22Magnum. Shot placement is the key, everyone knows that. BTW, I am new here! Hi everyone, my name is Danielle, I am from South Texas.... I'll be checking back to read the boards. Y'all take care... enjoy the rest of deer season!

The 45-70 is a good cartridge but if you really want to hit them hard I have a 458.
They don’t feel much after that!!!

22 mag?

Did I read that right TxTomboy, you have hunted and killed black russian boar
with a 22 mag? I have never heard of such a thing. Interesting to say the least.
You have more than enough courage than I if you hunt boar with a 22 mag. To me thats like a bb gun on a russian boar.

Take Care

I prefer my 338 win mag or 405 grn jsp bullet from my 45-70

..22 mag, sure could. But like the man said. Shot placement is the key. It also helps when he's on the ground tied or has a 100# catch dog on the side of his head.

I had a 350# +/- boar come out of a thicket less than 10' from me with 2 young bay dogs in front of him, (barely) and 2 finished gritty dogs each holding onto a leg behind him. I did one of those turn quick, bring the iron up and aim (yes, I did aim) for a vital shot with a .410 slug. Only problem is the vital shot on a deer and a hog arent exactly the same. Deer dont have a 2" plate of cartiladge protecting the heart and lungs. Needless to say, he locked up the brakes made a u turn and left mad (in a hurry I might add) with a slight discomfort in his shoulder. He has been seen since and although he now has a limp, he is reportedly doing fine.

New preferred arms; 357 Mag with 158 gr jsp or a 12 gauge slug gun. I dont believe in buckshot for anything, (other than running off traspassers). Seen too many guys piont and shoot like it is bird shot, which I guess it is. If I'm not using dogs, I carry a .270 with 150 gr power point. I guess I would still carry the 410 again, I just felt rather fullish for taking that shot. If he was standing still, yea right, I would have gone for the head shot but reflexes took over.

22 mag

Wow that is something a 22 mag and a 410. Thats something I wouldn't do myself. I think if I ever hunt black russian boar again I will stick to the 47-50 or the 338. I don't live in Cali anymore but they are allot of fun to hunt. I guess I'm hooked on elk now.

Good luck on future hunts.

Dont get me wrong, I dont believe I'll use the .410 again without a catch dog, which I am without at this time. My dogs are great bay dogs, but they dont get catchy until the hog is caught. This is fine with me anyways. I dont want my black mouths getting cut up trying to lock onto a big hog. The only problem I have hunting without a catch dogs is I have to take a shot without getting my bay dogs hit. If they have it bayed up, I have confidence in my ability to "thread the needle" if you will, based on the situation, and not shoot a dog. Same deal with the .22 Mag. If a hog is on the ground and locked onto or tied, a .22 to the head is a nice clean dispatch.

As far as the 5" steel, I'd subscribe to that only if he was tied. I've seen guys stick 'em with another fella holding the hind leggs. Nothin personnal guys but I'd trust a big old bulldog to hold 'em for me before I consider a blade.

Everyone have a good day !
