Water Buffalo Caliber

Howdy All!

I've been talking with my spouse, She Who Must Be Obeyed, and I may have the opportunity to go down under for a water buffalo hunt. Nothing set in stone yet, and the trip would be two to three years off if I do get to go, and was wondering what rifle I should pick. I've been looking at the following:

.35 Whelen

9.3 x 62

.375 Ruger

My choices are in no particular order and I would prefer to use a rifle that I would opt to use for hunts other than just this one hunt. Right now my first choice is the 9.3 with the .375 being the last choice. What say you all?

Well if I had to go tomorrow

Well if I had to go tomorrow I would take the Whelen as that's the largest I now own. Load it up with 225gr TSX and I think I would be fine.

That said I plan to have them all at some point in time and really wanted the 9.3x62 when I bought this last one.

I think I would jump to the .375 Ruger next though to get a much bigger power gain over the 35 Whelen.

That said if I was buying just one for that hunt primarily and other smaller animals later I think I would take the 9.3x62. Not sure though as at least on paper with no actual experience I think the Whelen with the bullets mentioned is totally up to the job.

I say take both, shoot 2, and compare notes when it's over. Yes

i would take my trusty .375

i would take my trusty .375 H&H.  i would use 300grain nosler partitionand take swome solids also. i did shoot one with my .376 steyr scout rifle, using 270 grain soft points and they worked fairly well.
