I have three savage rifles 22-250,,17HMR and 300 wsm all 3 shot moa out of the box and with my handload the 22-250 makes one ragged hole with 3 shots.
An old Marlin .22 lever-action for small game / Win Model 70 .30-06 for big.
From a choice of the three above I have to ask what decade or year period are we talking here. All three have offered great quality fireams over the years in their hayday. All three have also offered some pretty shameful spotty and poor general quality at certain times, Remington being the case recently. I also would not own a Winchester rifle or shotgun that was made within ten years prior to the closing of the USRAC factory in New Haven. Having said that I do own many Remington and Winchester rifles and shotguns and have been very pleased with them. My standard biggame hunting rifle is a Winchester Model 70 and my dedicated waterfowl shotgun is a Remington 11-87 SP.
i would rather get a savage in small calaber and tikka t3 in larger calabers
oh, i can't believe it, yet another favorite gun question.
i'll say it with pride one more time. winchester. model 70 (CRF) in .243.
i have a weatherby vanguard (1990's version, which is different from the current ones) it's a good shooting rifle, but not nearly as good as the winchester.
just saying the name winchester... get me kind of teary-eyed... in a mnaly kind of way. i might love that gun more than my wife... DON'T TELL HER!!! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!
I have used Remington rifles all my life and a is currently my favorite right now. My previous 700's that I still own are fine examples and great guns. The 700 XCR that is my main rifle now was the most expensive and a gift from my wife but I have to say it was the poorest Remington I have ever owned. I have replaced the stock and trigger and it shoots pretty good now but not nearly as well as the others. I also have a bolt binding problem that shows up at random and makes extraction difficult.
I recently bought a used Tikka laminated that I really like and cost a lot less.
I have a few Winchesters but they are all 80 to over 100 year old lever guns that I really enjoy.
Since the subject of this older thread is an interesting one, I'll add my .02 as well. As far as bolt guns are concerned, my favorite model is the Winchester M70. I probably like my pre '64s the most, but the newer M70s are fine rifles as well. My one, older, Sako is also a very fine bolt gun.
My favorite lever rifle is a BLR in .358 I own with the older steel receiver. Some older Marlins I have are also very smooth, nice rifles as well. Winchester levers are not among my favorites, except for the M88.
My favorite semi-auto an older BAR, full Belgium made GRII. Very nice rifle. I may have actually killed more deer though with a Rem 7400 I used to own in .35 Whelen. That rifle was the hammer of Thor on deer.
My favorite single shot rifle is the Ruger #1 and the favorite one I own is in 45-70. If you had to hunt all big game with one rifle/cartridge, this would be tough to beat. Could be my overall favorite....
I guess I'll add to my previous post. With regards to small game hunting and .22LR I prefere Ruger.
