WARNING about Links!

We would like to alert users of the BGH Forums to be cautious about clicking on links placed on this site, particularly by new members that have not contributed and simply place a link to what appears to be an ad or link to their own site.

Over the past week we have deleted several posts (with links) that went to sites that had been tampered with, meaning the sites have been infested with worms, spyware and/or viruses. The type you get when you simply click on an URL (website link).

We don't know if posters are aware of their compromised websites, but we're willing to bet that some posters may be individuals that have intentionally compromised the site and then posted links on relevant forums to get people to click on the links. In those instances its probably not the owner of the site posting the URL, but indeed the hacker.

If you keep your anti-virus program updated, clicking on the links should not be a problem. However if its a newly released virus, spyware or worm, it very well could be a problem for anyone clicking on the link. So be careful!

BTW, the same caution should be taken with any PM or emailed message that includes links.

WARNING about Links!

A good idea to to take a very close look at the Url(web address).

Example http://www.weatherby.com/products/ballistics.asp

Should give you a good idea what you are opening.

WARNING about Links!

That is true in some cases, however some links have been URLs to seemingly innocuous sites, like outfitters or products. The URL will not tell you anything about what may be embedded in that website.

It is true that sites you are familiar with and in particular familiar namebrands should be ok.

Hammer what you might be referring to is an URL that redirects to another URL/site, then yes looking at the URL closely to make sure its correct is the right way to protect yourself.

What we're trying to warn about here, are websites that have viruses/worms/spyware, etc., embedded in their sites.
