walking to the stand

any advice on walking to the stand? Should I make noise? Stay quiet? I will be in Ontario next week hunting over bait with my bow..although it is gun season. According to the outfitter, 1pm is the time we will be walking to the stand.

What do you all do?

If you are hunting with a licensed guide,he/she should address that concern. The guide ,simply carrying a 12 ga, would work for me.

Shelby
I am assuming you ars hunting over bait?
My advice would be to walk in as quiet as you possibly can.
The only time I would condone making noise is if the path to the stand took you right by the bait barrel and you could see that the barrel had already been hit and emptyed. (it is tought to sit on an empty bait all afternoon) If this is the case (even if you dont have anything to add to the bait) I would recomend making some noise setting the barrel back up and looking like it has been rebaited. Then sneak into the stand.

Good luck with the bow.

That ADKbear has been studying all the sneaky tricks. He's dead on with that advice.
Now, what do you do when its getting dark and you know theres a large male hanging back a bit--just waiting!

Well I guess ol Sawbill wants to make us work for this one Thumbs up

If I know a big one is around and not coming in I start changing it up the next night
-Have someone drop me off the next night so the bear hears your ride drive away.
- I always take a portable stand with me, and will change locations if possible
-Try some extra bait (if ok with the guide!) like peanut butter, honey or a honey burn

Getting the bear to come in the first night you hear him I have always considered calling (but never done it)?

Shelby Im also guessing since you are hunting Ontario you will be on a baited hunt and hopefully like they said earlier the bait is freshly stocked up. I use a call and it works great for me so give it a shot. 1pm seems a little early in the afternoon but if thats how they do it give it a try make sure you stay till the sun is pretty much gone and bring a good flash light if your planning on walking outta there any distance and when you get outta your stand load your gun back up till your out.
