Video Bow Hunting

The local archery range here has a video shoot. You can shoot African or North American game. It projects animals on the screen and using your arrow with blunt points, you shoot at them. The game scores your hits.

Not real hunting of course, but pretty realistic. You don't know when or for how long the animal will give you a shot, so time is of the essence. You get points taken away for poor shots taken, angle, blocked shots, etc.

They have an 8 week that I joined. Seems like a fun way to get practice in the off season.

Where's that range at? What day of the week or what is the 8 week that you signed up for?

The range is B squared outdoors in Topeka. South Topeka on hwy 75.

I meant to write I joined a 8 week video league. You can come in and shoot whenever you want for the league. They have a paper league on Tues. and Wed. nights.

They are still signing people up, but right now I am sitting in fourth place out of six.

It is. You hear the deer cracking the twig, the elk bugleling and you have to wait for the angle, or for the critter to step out from the brush never knowing how long you have to shoot.

Or there will be a couple of shooters and you have to figure out which one to shoot.

Shooting targets, I can take my time and get my form perfect (well maybe not perfect) and shoot when I am set, but with this, I have the pressure of the time limit and knowing that I am going to get scored on each shot so there is some added pressure.

Not exactly like the real thing, but I am sure it is going to help me next archery season. I tend to rush my shots in the wild and I think this is going to help me form some good habits.

beware video shoots

CVC, be careful of shooting the video too much. It is definately a great way to practice, loads of fun and can really get you primed for the season.
I used to shoot the dart target system a couple times a week for an hour each time and had done league shoots on it for several years. UNfortunately, I found my shooting coming off the mark on paper and 3-D. I recently changed my sights which I bought at a different range from where I normally shoot and ws sighting them in. The owner of the shop asked me if I shot those screens alot and I told him "yes". He said I had "target panic". He termed it that because he has seem something in people that shoot the screens alot that they try to antipate every shot like on the screen before it "times out" and then flinches, pulls or all kinds of variables. I have since backed off the screen and went back to normal practice and have "healed my infliction".
This may not happen to everyone, but everyone should be aware of the possibilities of this type of shooting being the cause of newly formed bad habits. I knew something was wrong as I had shot alot of 3-D and competition in the past and knew something happened somewhere along the way.
