Vet trying to start elk hunting in CO

Howdy everyone! As you may be able to tell from my username, I am a SFC in the Army and stationed (STAYING!!) in Colorado Springs. I have been here three years now but this is my first hunting season at home (just got back from AFG two weeks ago. I was unsuccessful in the deer draw for the third straight year and would love to go elk hunting in 2nd or 3rd rifle. My problem is that having not been around much In have had no ability to get out and scout (also due to being gone a lot it is hard to justify taking scouting trips instead of being with the little ones and mama). I am trying to find some experienced hunting buddies who would be willing to take me under their wing. I would love to find a group to join. I have about 5 years experience hunting Midwest whitetails and NW blackies. I shoot a 30-06 and have gear, a truck and a utility trailer to contribute to a camp. Welcome and thank you for your service.

Hang around, comment on a few threads, and get to know a few members and I'm sure the hunting oppotunities will come your way. I saw someone posting here last year that seemed to be really successful and had good ethics. That prompted me to ask him if I could hunt with him.

It was a gamble, but it paid off. We are going to WY next month for our first hunt. Find a few folks whose stories you like, and can write a story. Then ask if you can hunt with them. The worst they can say is, "No." It's not like you never heard that word before.

Thanks for replying and you should see me on here quite a bit. I have really taken to hunting and love talking about it when i can't get to the woods. Luckily retirement isn't that far away, at least parttime.

Welcome to BGH and to Colorado ! I live in Western Colorado and if something does not pan out for you I would be more than happy to have you join our elk camp in 2014. The reason I say 2014 is next year I will draw a unit 40 elk tag here in Colorado (trophy unit).

Thanks for the reply and the offer. Another vet has invited me for this year in the 2nd rifle season. Also, had lunch with SGM the other day. It is great to meet folks who are interested in the same things and in caring for and enjoying our great wild places.

I didn't post this earlier because it is hard to talk about. I was supposed to go elk hunting this year for the first time with my buddy Matt Harvey. Matt was in my unit, from Texas and an avid hunter. He was a double Purple Heart recipient and my friend. A month before I deployed this year (FEB) Matt was killed in an auto accident while TDY in Germany. I didn't know if I could try to go out this season or not. But a couple of weeks ago when I got back from AFG I was talking about Matt to one of the guys at work and just knew that he would have expected me to get my ass out there if I had a chance. It is the least I could do. Let's all put some "Brown Down" for Matt this year! Thanks again, SFC B

SFC - Sorry to hear about

SFC - Sorry to hear about your loss and thanks for your service. You still have time to get out a weekend or two with the wife and kids and make a scouting/family trip and see some beautiful fall colors. You can be down either by Pagosa Spgs. or Gunnsion in a few hours from Ft. Carson and both areas offer good hunting. I understand wanting to go with a group, but your better off going by yourself and with your kids as they get bigger. I usually am more successful on solo hunts, but it can be tough when you get a bull down. To me scouting/planning can be tons of fun too. I just seen where there are lots of doe pronghorn and whitetail doe tags for the plains you could also hunt.

Quinton - What season are you planning on rifle hunting in 40? I have been three years behind in PP for unit 40 4th rifle season, but I think,hope Im golden with 5 PP next year.

I have been trying for the 1st rifle season and now have 6 PP's. It looks like I am a point behind so I may end up going 3rd. One of my friends have been trying talk me into 2nd or 3rd season instead. Saying more days to hunt and a better chance of killing a monster.

We will have to see !

Thank's for your srevice and welcome to the great days ahead of you in hunting the great out doors. It's been awhile sents I have been on the this web site but have been reading it for years.I presently live in Arizona and lived in Durango a few year back and all I can say is I miss the hunting and the ability to hunt elk every year I hope you get the help to get you started, But it looks like you are on your way.

Quniton - My last post didn't

Quniton - My last post didn't work. I would like hunt the 3rd season instead of the 4th, but its my wifes b-day and I would lose a day to hunt. I have always liked the 3rd because of the week break between the 2nd, the nine day season now, and good chance to get some snow. Good luck in drawing, Preston
