The northern VT zones have higher populations and give out more permits. The zone I live in, P, has only been open since 2002 so the moose haven't been hunted as long. Wish I'd known about a guy with a horse team living right in my town....my son & I had to cut up our bull to get it out & never got an official weight. This was in 2002 - our bull had 17-points, 61" width. The state record was taken that same year a few miles north, 65" as I recall though not as big bodied. A guy by the name of Chris Harrington of Bennington cut ours up; cost about $200. VT F&W sent us a how-to book that listed some people who were available for hire to get your moose out though none in our immediate area. I've heard they cost about $300 but believe me, it'd be worth it at twice the price. Zone P has raised its permit quota to 30 from 10 in 2002 & 15 in 2003 & 2004. 100% success rate in Zone P last year. VT Fish & Wildlife has a pretty good web site and you can request last years statistics which give a zone by zone breakdown. Only 10% of permits are allocated for nonresidents and if you draw a permit it'll cost you around $400. I just saw a good sized cow yesterday. BEST OF LUCK....unbelievable amount of work but worth it!!!

Thanks Doug. Do you know of any camp grounds or State property that you can hunt on around there? How do you do it? Have your own? How did you get the VT F&W to send you that pamphlet with the list of people to hall out your Moose? Thanks again for the info.

DUSE- try vtfishandwildlife.com. Once you're on the web site you can e-mail them for some of the information you're looking for. The state record I spoke of was taken in or near Woodford State Park off RT 9 although I'm not sure they're still open in October. However, it's all national forest around there and there's some primitive camping permitted in the Aiken Wilderness Area. It's all great moose territory & good bear country as well. There's motels in the area too. My son and I walked to our moose from our home; my family's lucky enough to live in the mountains. The book listing sources to get your moose out was sent with the moose permit; they might send you one on request, I don't know. Maine sells a pretty good video on moose hunting for about $10.00 @ state.me.us/ifw/index.htm. Mostly I read, talked to people who had hunted moose in VT, bought a Buck Expert brand call at Kittery Trading Post in ME, and had a co-worker show me how to make a call out of a coffee can and a shoelace. Internet helped a lot too. Otherwise I approached it like deer hunting with a lot of scouting. My recommendation is to also put in for moose tags in New Hampshire and Maine to increase your chances of getting one. Maine has a lot more in the way of guides,etc. Hope this will help get you started.

By the way, deer hunting near Lake Desolation in NYS last year I came on moose sign. Talked to a ranger who said there were a couple in there....if moose take hold in the Adirondacks you might be hunting in your own state soon.
