Vermont Moose hunt!

God has blessed me with one of the rare VT non-resident moose tags (after several years of applying). I was the second hunter on a friend’s moose tag last year (he took a nice cow). I’m from upstate NY just over the border from Poultney and Fair Haven. I am not new to hunting. But I drew a tag several spots down on my preferred hunting area list. So I am not at all familiar with the area I drew. I did stay fairly close for a week several years ago. At that time I saw “moose crossing” signs and plenty of tracks. God willing THIS time I’ll see MOOSE and bring one home.

I drew an either sex tag in area E2 (East Haven, Ferdinand, Brunswick, Granby, Concord, Lunenburg, Victor etc.).
I would welcome any advice on where to find moose, or a good place to stay or any other local knowledge anyone is willing to share. I’m guessing hotels might be few and far between in that area. I don’t mind camping for the week of moose season if there is a camp ground or a spot to throw a tent mid - late October.

The moose season opens October 17th 2009. I’ll need to scout a bit in advance. In fact I’ll probably need a couple of scouting trips before the season opens.

Can anyone recommend a butcher? Where we hunted last year was a forest preserve that forbid motorized vehicles. So we hauled that cow moose out with manpower. Does anyone know if the same rules apply to E2? If so, does anyone know a teamster with a good team of horses to haul a moose? If motorized access is allowed is there a local logger that hauls moose? Other options?

I have a contact number for cabin rentals in Maidstone state park. Any opinion as to whether that would be a good base camp would be appreciated too.

Thanks in advance for ANY help or advice. Hopefully this will be my first moose, so I need all that I can get!

Just found your post Mike. Congrats on your Tag! Thumbs up
I have applied 5 years in a row and I still haven't been drawn. You got chosen for a sweet spot for your hunt. But your right, hotels are few and far between in that part of the Northeast Kingdom. There is a program through the state where owners of camps in the area will donate their camp to a moose hunting party. I don't remember the particulars but I'm sure a search of the VT Fish and Wildlife site could find it, or you could speak to a human with a call to the Dept of F&W. I think motorized vehiceles depend on where you choose to hunt, Its a big management area. I know there are several good sporting good stores in the Kingdom in the Lyndon/St. Johnsbury area, the Newport area, and the Island Pond area who could probably answer any questions you might have better than me. I hope this helps some.
Good luck. Wish I could go with you!

Thanks

I have one of those camps in Maidstone state park reserved "if I want it" since I was the first to call for a reservation. Searching out sport shops is a great place to start. I'll give it a shot.

You must be due to get a tag next year since I'll be out of the pool for the next three years. Good luck!

hey there Mike, congrats to you! this is my first visit and post in this forum, and i think i can be of some help. you see, i got a tag back in 2004, for E2. got a really nice cow moose too, 684 dressed. first step, if you dont have one, get a delormes atlas. secondly, once you get it, check out the western border of the zone, specifically the VICTORY ROAD. you can hunt on the east side of the road. big woods, big marshes. lots of state land with gates, that are usually open for the season. also, in granby, check out the PAUL STREAM ROAD(thats where i got mine). this is paper company land, with lots and lots of side roads. sawsome really nice animals come out of there. and, you can shoot from the roaqd, among other things, because it is private road, some rules dont apply. also, in east haven, the radar loop road. and for a place to stay, just across the river in lancaster, n.h. is a huge campground. if you waant, send me a p.m. and i will send you my phone number. oh yeah, i am going too! my dad got drawn, and invited me to go for his second. he drew an either sex tag for D1, so i will be in the area with you. you get the east side of victory, i get the west. later, hope this helps, Pat vtbuckrulrss@aol

GREAT advice.  By God's grace, I bagged my moose and I'll be posting the story here within a few days.  Once the story goes up, I'll link it from this thread THANKS FOR THE HELP!
