Vacuum packed meat

I opened a package that was just butchered,  NOT FROZEN yet.  Figured I'd BBQ a steak, and toss the rest in the freezer.

It stunk like SULFER,  nasty nasty smell.   had to throw it away.  I thought the meat was bad.

Was the smell from the vacuum processing, or from bad meat ?

The rest is frozen, and don't know what to do with it.....

Did you do the butchering or did you have someone else do it?  I doubt that it was from the vacuuming process since I have done a lot of meat with one and have had no problems with it.  As for the rest you are going to have to check it as you go.  Or check a few packages and see what they smell like and then decide what to do with the rest.

Welcome to BGH!  As for the smell it doesn't sound like it is the vacuum packaging as I too have done that many times with no sulfer smell afterwards.  Sounds like it may have spoiled.  I would open/thaw another package or two and if they smell the same take it to the butcher for their reasoning.

I don't generally vacuum mine

I don't generally vacuum mine but have never had that problem with any I did. Things like this are why I do all my own processng so I know every event from shot to wrap.

I vacuum pack all of my meat

I vacuum pack all of my meat and have never had any "bad" smells from a package of meat.  Like the others, I'd check a few other packages.  Sounds to me like it may be spoiled.  Bummer.
