VA Dog Hunting in the news

Mikewin, I have been trying to find out which states still allow deer hunting with dogs but can only find a few. I have read about 20 articles that say there are 9 states left but I can only verify 5 of them. The ones I have been able to find so far are Florida, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. I will keep trying to figure out the rest and will post them as soon as I find them.

Thanks! But that seems to be deer hunting related? I guess it is the case that you sometimes can hunt other species with dogs as well? Or is, generally, hunting with dogs not allowed when deer hunting with dogs is not allowed? Sorry for all the questions but it is an interesting topic.

Hunting with dogs

I don't know of any states that don't allow dogs for bird hunting or cottontail rabbit hunting. Not sure about the western states and rabbit hunting.
Hope this helps.

OK. Makes sense. The controversy then solely concerns big game hunting, I guess.

Mikewin, sorry about the confusion on this. The controversary on this is about deer hunting with dogs. I don't know of any state that has any laws that completely forbids dogs while hunting. We use dogs for retrieving, pointing, rabbits, coons etc. in every state, depending on what you hunt where you live. Hope that clears things up a little bit.

OK. Guessed about as much. I know there are different laws concerning hunting other big game, such as bears or wild boar, with dogs in the US. But I would guess there are few, if any, states that allow dog hunting when elk or moose is the prey?

Ok, Im no bird hunter (cant even HEAR a turkey this season) but Id say that you can use dogs in all 50 states to retreive birds and flush them (not turkey) and probably use them for things like rabbit and coon. All I know is that you can do all of that in VA, (except in Spring Turkey season). But Im like 99.9% sure that in every state some form of dog hunting is legal.
