Utah's Guide Book is Out

For those of you that are interested Utah's Guide Book is now out in it's official version.

The biggest change was that they went to 30 units for the general hunt instead of the 5 regions and they cut another 6,000 deer tags.  The purpose of the 30 units is to allow better management of the deer herd since it has been dropping for quite a few years and they want to try and get a hand on in.  That is also the reason for the cut in tags also.

Also for those who don't know Utah's Limited Entry and Once in a Lifetime hunts are set up with bonus points so when you put in you really don't know if you are going to draw or not.  I have seen people draw a tag with 0 points when a hunter with 10 points didn't.  As for the general deer hunts they use preference points to help out those that didn't draw the previous year.

The application period will start February 1, 2012 and is done on line but the draws will not take place until sometime in May.  They also do not know how many tags are going to be offered in each unit until the range rides are done in April of 2012 so a lot of this stuff is going to be a crap shoot if you want to put in for a general season hunt.

nice

I'm most curious how they are going to distribute the tag quotas in those new deer regions to see if that will change any of the normal pressure

I would guess that the few

I would guess that the few areas that were limited to a 5 day hunt in years past will have a lot fewer tags than the others.  So for the Lasals, and Monroe Mountain, Dutton, and a couple of others I would suspect that those areas will be quite limited.  The northern areas that always had tags left after the draws will quite possibly have left over tags in all the units, but a lot of the northern areas are private property and that is why they have tags left over.

One thing that I didn't mention is that they did away with the state wide archery tag so the archers will have to pick their unit that they want to hunt in.  But if they haven't taken a deer when the archery season has ended they will still be able to hunt the Wasatch Front extended season that runs later in the year.

It is really going to be interesting in the draw for deer this year.
