For those of you that might be interested Utah's big game draw is open now. Also for those that don't know already they have done away with the 5 regions and went to 30 seperate units excluding the limited entry units for deer. They are also cutting a additional 3000+- tags for this year hunt due to the deer herd.
Gonna get my app in right about nowish. Just going for deer and elk points this year.
One nice thing about being a non resident is that you can put in for all the hunts where a resident can only put in for one limited entry and one once in a lifetime hunt along with the general deer.
So this year I be doing the deer, elk, antelope, bison, moose, goat, and sheep applications. The way that Utah's bonus points are set up I may just draw one of them. But I should draw my LE hunt for a deer in the Book Cliffs, but then the way that my luck goes who knows.
I applied this morning for all.
Hey critter how many points you got fot LE deer at Book cliffs?
Did my Utah apps day before yesterday. Only did points this year for goats, deer and bison but did apply for an antelope tag. I have 3 points going in but it's not enough really. Could get lucky though with random draw.
Here is a money saving tip. In Utah the hunting license is good for 365 days from the time of purchase, so you can actually use the same license to apply for the draw in two different years. I did the last two years (2010 and 2011). This year I will apply in the last week that they accept applications. Next year I will apply as soon as I can, and therefore use this years license to apply for both years. This might save you some $ in the future. Likely they will figure this out and make changes, but its nice while it lasts.
I should have a 1 in 6 shot at an early rifle San Juan elk tag this year!!!
For me it really doesn't matter as I go fishing at lake Powell at least a couple times a year so I buy the combo license every year anyway as the cheaper option than the 7 day fishing license several times.
I would definately play the system if that were not the case though.
Just as a note to those who haven't put in yet but are thinking of trying for a bison permit in the Utah Book Cliffs which is a new hunt. This hunt will be extremely tough going if they are not up on top of the ridges. The area that the division transplanted them into a few years ago does not have any roads in the bottom and without horses it could be a long heavy pack out, but then that can be said of a lot of the Book Cliffs. There are a lot of roads but never one where you need one.
I am about to lose my 2 points that I had for deer in utah (I stop putting in when they required the n $65 hunting license). I will go ahead and put in for some hunts on the 1st of March. I have 2 questions.
Since you do not have to send the permit fees in Utah (right?) I will put in for the "best" hunts and test my luck in the drawings.
Question 1) Which units in Southeast Utah (close to NM) have the biggest elk.
I also want to build points for a species of animals we don't have in NM (goats/moose/bison & maybe bighorn sheep since its almost impossible to draw here).
Question 2) Which animal of these species have the best sucessful harvest numbers in Utah?

All you have to send in is the $10.00 application fee for each animal along with a valid credit card in case you draw the tag.
The San Juan unit hands down

They are all either 100% or very close to it since they are a once in a lifetime tag in Utah. Also being a non resident you can put in for all of them but if you do draw a tag it will only be for one of them but you will get a point on the rest that you have a application in for.
