Using a 243 for Whitetail Deer hunting.

What are your thoughts on this? I will be taking my daughter hunting this year with a Browning 243 using Winchester 55 Gr. Ballistic Silver Tip ammunition. Will this have enough power to take down a Whitetail Deer at a range of 50 to 125 yards?

The .243 is definately a good deer rifle, however, I would shoot an 80 or 85 grain bullet.the recoil differnce will hardly be noticeable.

I agree with Kgoody. Go for a heavier grain (more mass). I use 100 grain.

100 Grain, definatly. Plus, some states have a minimum bullet wgt. you can use. Most I have seen is 100 grains for big game.

a 55gr will kill a deer but it is easily detoured by sticks and such- now you would not like your daughter to miss because of a light bullet but if you use another type of bullet use remington ballistic tip almost the best deer bullet around you cant beat it hope this was helpful.

Zippy240SX took a massive doe opening night with a 243. A clean, one shot kill. Those Premier AccuTip rounds are extremely reliable.

The Winchester 55 grain round is designed for varmint hunting, and for rapid expansion and is not a good choice for deer. It's designed to blow up a prairie dog. It is not designed for deer. Although it might work, you'd be better off with something 90-100 grains, as those are designed for heavier animals.

Just a heads up for others, in CO anything less than 70 grains on a deer is illegal. Perhaps there are similar regulations where you hunt....

I did take a great Doe at about 165 yards with my 243 using 95 grain acutips. I would say yea go up to 90 to 100 grain rounds because even my lil 45 lb cousin madison shoots them fine.

Ditch the 55's and go with a heavier bullet.
