Elk Hunt

Understand about the phone minutes. Just let me know when you would like me to call. I can talk better then I can type. You are lucky to be so close to where you will be hunting. I have to drive six hours to get up to Long Lake to scout. I take 3 or 4 day weekends when I go up. I,ve been up three times and seen elk every day. Bulls and cows. I know the elk won't be out in the open come hunting season that is why I'm scouting the canyons. Don't know when I'll get up there again as I'm going to Alaska Aug. 17 for ten days. I know I'll be up there as soon as I get back. My friend's hunt starts Sep tenth I think. When is your son's hunt ? Did you get a tag ? Do you hunt deer ? Gun are bow ? Keep in touch , Donnie

Long Drive

I do understand the long drive. I have had some deer hunts down south that have taken that long to drive to. Heck I even drive to the white mountains to scout for turkey hunts. lol, I do deer hunt as well, the last time i was drawn for deer I actually passed my tag onto one of my boys. I am due for a tag and cant wait to see the draw results. But I did put in for a white tail rut hunt, so I doubt I will get drawn. My son's hunt starts September 24th. With my buds hunt in your same area of your buds maybe we will run into each other as I am sure I wil be there for a day or two.  Last year there was a monster bull around the long lake area, everyone was scoring it to be 390+. I never got to see it. But from what I hear it was never taken. It was pushed out of the area by the archery hunters so by the time my hunt started it was out of the area. But then again I didn't give myself much of a chance to find it, because I shot my Bull the 1st day. I think that alot of times bulls will come back to the same locations year after year to rut. (My opinion). Obviuosly my friends know about this as well, but they have other locations they like also, so I don't mind sharing. That's the only way I heard about it. We should all share information, it is not like we all get to hunt Elk every year.

Past weekend

I just got back from spending 4 days in unit 5bs. Spent some time in areas I have never been before. Mostly around or close to the Anderson mesa area. Just south and west of Anderson had alot of Elk and Elk sign around tanks and lakes. I'll share more with you if interested.

5bs information

Hi bigalwapiti -  I would be interested in any information you can share 5bs. This will be my first year hunting in AZ as I am from CO and always head back there to hunt with my dad and brother and decided this year to put in for a late cow tag in 5bs (3-9 Dec) and got lucky. I am not familiar with 5bs at all and have made one scouting trip so far and was around the gooseberry springs area and will be heading back up over labor day. Any info would be great.

Hunt

I would work the area around Tremaine lake, south to Jacks Canyon. Gooseberry is around 8000 ft. elevation, Tremaine is around 6700 ft. You most likely will have snow on the ground by then, even though it wont be alot that could push them down, I still see alot more in that area after all the other hunts.

Thanks

I appreciate the information. 3 of us have cow tags and are staying at a place in a little development east of Clint Wells on 87 just past 318. I just took a peek at my map and see that Jacks Canyon is just north of where we will be staying for the hunt. I am heading up labor day weekend to learn the lay of the land a little more. Any suggestions on where to scout? I believe that archery will be started so I definitely do not want to get in the way of other hunters. We were going to camp up by Gooseberry again as that is what I know right now, unless you have some other suggestions for some good camping spots. Thanks again!
