unit 85 elk archery?

First of all im a BGH.net newbie and glad i found the site. My friend and I decided to hunt the archery season with his friend and coworker. He grew up hunting gmu85 and has bow hunted it several seasons and seams to know the ins and outs of the land. Kind of having second thoughts but just because im like that not anything he has said or done. maybe some of you guys know this unit or can give me your opinions on the area. thanks ahead of time.

Mainly private land, that's the biggest drawback. However, if you have access to hunt private can be quite an excellent unit. Does your bud have access to hunt private?

unit 85 elk archery?

He said something about being able to hunt his grandfathers property but he says he has a few great spots on public land and knows how to get around the area without getting on private land. but that is one of the things that i hesitate about. there are alot of other units with more public land. If it was just me i wouldn't second guess as much but im taking my 14yr old son for the first time and this will also be my last year as a colorado resident. so to me alot is riding on this season. not expecting to drop 2 bulls but i would love to better my chances at harvesting some elk.

Well it sounds like it really rides on how good the connections are your bud has. The public land I know of in this unit tends to be on the small and rugged side. Areas where you can get lucky and find elk moving thru but not areas known to hold elk at all times. I know of guys who do really well, but they have access to private land which is surprisingly very low elevation areas.

Places that aren't too far from Pueblo that are over the counter and have lots of Elk would be around Saguache or Del Norte, units 681 and 79 and 80. OTC archery tags available and lots of public land and good elk numbers. Usually get a lot of pressure, but as is always the case for those willing to work to get away from the crowds opportunities are there.

Hey SoCo, i have never purchased an otc archery tag before and i just noticed the tag says "054" on it instead of "085". my buddy said they all say that and i can hunt any of the otc units with that tag. is this true? if so i feel alot better because if i don't have much luck on 85 with my friends i can try somewhere else. right? it is for the best but their are to many rules in this state for me to keep up with.

He is correct. So you are good for 85 and any other non-draw only OTC unit. So with a month to hunt you can hit a few different areas. FYI the bulls usually start getting hotter into the rut and more active from mid Sep thru early Oct. Early Sep. would be more spot and stalk end of month you have more chance to call one in.

Good luck!
