Unit 71 and 74 questions?

If anybody hunted around or is familiar with the areas of San Juan national forest I have a few questions . First will there be elk there in late september ? From what I can tell the altitudes are from 7500 to around 9000 feet . The second question is would it be of any benefit to pack a climber treestand in . I didnt know how much success there is in finding an area with a lot of sign and dont really know if the trees in that area were able to be climbed with a treestand. I know of a study done on elk in area of colarodo a few years back and when pressured by hunters these animals pushed into thick areas away from easy access areas with very little traffic. The study was done during the opening weekend of rifle and the elk were wearing radio collars and basically where the hunters came in on easy access trails the elk just pushed deeper to areas wher it was to thick for even the horses to go.

Tony,
There will be elk at those altitudes, but most bowhunters hunt a little higher than that. I know I wouldn't pack a treestand. One day of that in elk country and it will be your last.
As far as elk pressure, that's absolutely correct, the elk know what is up and don't will basically go where everyone else isn't.
One way to find good pockets of potential elk use outside of wilderness areas is to take a fat highlighter and trace over all the roads on your map. This will help you visualize the extensive roadless areas and the areas of highest pressure. Even during bow season there are a lot of hunters in the woods.

Unit 71 and 74 questions?

I now have it narrowed down to unit 71 between Stoner and Rico. The altitudes are 8500 to 11000 feet . I have also located horses so I wont be using 4 wheelers. It wont be till sept 2010 but anyone familiar with the area advice would be appreciated. This will be an aechery hunt and I would be happy with a cow elk.
