Unit 61 over rated?

I’ve been looking forward to hunting Colorado’s unit 61 for many years now.  Now that I have enough points to draw a Muley archery tag in just about any unit in the state I’m hearing that unit 61 is over rated.  Is it??  If you had 6 resident points for deer what unit would you use them in for an archery hunt for a trophy Muley?

I’ve only got a month to decide any input would be apriciated.

Thanks,

 Conrad

If I had 6 I would be

If I had 6 I would be thinking pretty darn hard about hunting 61. I don't have a ton of experience there but I have seen some pretty good bucks in my limited experience there. It was in September and they really didn't seem all that spooky either. Although I have heard others say that most of the big bucks head into the nasty scrub pretty quick in the unit.

I am a little bit partial to

I am a little bit partial to the area that I live in which is 44.  There are some great bucks here but you have to work for them.  One of the largest mule deer bucks that I have ever seen was in this unit.

My only problem is that after this year I'll have 17 resident preference points and need to make a decision for 2012 since that is when I am going to burn them.  I do know that unit 61 is on my radar along with unit 10.  I figured that if I was going to build points that I was going to get a lot of them and then go after a super unit for the hunt, but I do hunt the border of 44 and 444 when I am archery hunting each year and have had a few chances at some real nice bucks.

colorado 61 or 10 fo deer

I also have points to hunt eather unit but I took 10 off my list even though I have had several great hunts there over the last 16 years. I haven't been up there in the last 4 years but last season 2 guys from work hunted elk in 10,one early and one 3rd season and these guys have also hunted there several times in the past . They both said they couldn't beleave how FEW deer they saw and no bucks worth talking about. So I went back through the post hunt herd stats and the count is down about 40% from 5 years ago, a phone call to the local DOW could be a dime well spent before parting with those points

Well that's it... the wait is

Well that's it... the wait is over, I just applied for a unit 61 muley tag. I’ve been looking forward to hunting that unit forever and I’m almost guaranteed to draw this year.

I dont think you will be disappointed. I scouted this unit a few years ago I found this group of bucks my first morning up a few days after the draws came out. I followed them just about everyweekend through 2nd season. The buck on the right turned out to be a real toad straight up with really deep forks but like Elkkill said they are hard to find come 4th season. I have half dozen spots I think would be worth checking out send me a pm. Will you be able to scout? I will be up scouting early my buddy put in for muzzy bull with 12 pts. Did you ever get to run those lions in southern Arizona?

here's wishing you luck

Don't forget, if you can't hunt, you can return the tag and have your points restored.
