Unit 61 Muzzle or rifle?

Hi guys, I love your posts and have a question of my own. I've been caught up in the unit 2/201 dream for a long time. I believe the 20 points I have give me a pretty good shot at unit 61 muzzle or 1st rifle. The dates of the muzzle begin early on sept 8th, and the first rifle isn't until Oct. 13th. considering the hot temps of last year and the possability it could repeat again, and considering the effect they have on those hot blooded elk we all love.....which would you choose to put in for? The muzzle or the 1st rifle. I tired of giving up the hunts with my brother since uses his points at a lot lower level and god knows how long it will take to actually get drawn for 201 or 2....i'm a non-resident. Appreciate your comments.

What do you enjoy shooting

What do you enjoy shooting the most, the ML or the high power rifle?  Since you have been banking points for a real good unit what do you expect to shoot?  I personally have shot a nice 7x6 bull in Utah a few years ago with the high power rifle and when I cash in my Colorado points I am leaning quite heavily toward the muzzle loader tag but then that is just me.  One thing that can help if the weather is hot and dry is that the elk will be hanging around water a lot more than they might be a little bit later and after a couple of real good rain storms or a little bit of snow.

Now with 20 points it looks like you can hunt either one of the hunts that you want to.

Hi Critter, Actually my elk

Hi Critter, Actually my elk carreer has been spent up on the grand mesa and a little east. Not that I have measured every bull but I don't believe I've taken one that was over 280 pnts. So, with that in mind I had always looked at the 2/201 hunt to be the time I took the "one". So its not so much the weapon as it is the size.....I would definetly like to finally break 300 or higher. We all no there's nothing like hearing bugles on those cold crisp mornings, i know it gets my heart a thumping! I was just thinking we may see a hot weather repeat which means...maybe the the 8th might be a touch early but then the 13th might be a touch late...after spending all those years waiting for the big one its a tough choice cause when its done..its done! I too have 12 Utah points building and top wyoming points. But being 50 I think the 2/201 dream is going to see me on the wrong side of the grass before I get to go. I have always been a DIY person so the big horned beasts are starting to get a little heavy.....But....I'm stubborn! Big smile

Are you aware that 1st rifle

Are you aware that 1st rifle season in units 2 and 20 are cow only? There is an either sex tag for early season starting Oct 1st. I haven't looked up to see what points it takes, but you can do that.

Drawing a first season tag in

Drawing a first season tag in unit 2 would be a iffy proposition with the point creep.  Last year only 13% of the applicants drew a tag with 20 points.  Now unit 20 would be a sure draw with 20.

As far as being in the woods when the bulls are screaming their heads off is a crap shoot.  When I went to Utah for my hunt in September they were as quite as church mice until there was a hail storm just before the hunt.  Then you couldn't get them to shut up.  There were bulls everywhere yelling their heads off, not to mention fighting.

I think that if I was in your shoes I would go with the first season unit 61 tag.  I don't think that you'll be disappointed.

Morning stillhunter, yes i

Morning stillhunter, yes i knew...it was the early rifle Oct 1st I was waiting for all these years but the point creep is getting the best of me. Its kinda tuff not hunting with your Kin folk when they use thier points repeatedly while you hold out for one big hunt.

I agree Critter, question is going forward with the hybrid draw, it cuts another tag from unit 2 or 201 that I could draw....if i understand it right.....The DOW published a paper showing how many total people have elk points at all levels....it kinda gave me a wake up call...it could take awhile to sift thru since there is but a handfull of tags given to non-resdents. Yes eventually I would get there but at what age,LOL! Unit 61 has quality animals also...i don't know maybe not quite as royal as 201 but any bull over 300 is exceptional for me. I respect your input and definetly will consider it! Thumbs up

I was in the Book Cliffs but I am familiar with a lot of the other areas that hold big elk.

I've heard good things about

I've heard good things about that area ( BIG area) Never been there but I have hunted near La Sal and saw some bigguns... Just curious how many points did it take and where you happy with the hunting there. I'm usually chasing mulies south of there and always see nice elk

It took me 9 non resident

It took me 9 non resident points to draw it in 2001 and my brother in law who is a resident drew it with 10 in 2002.  I really don't know how the hunting was since I shot my elk at 7:05 on the opening morning.  But there are elk all over the place there even now.  It would be a poor hunter that went into the Book Cliffs and didn't see over 100 elk a day counting both cows and bulls.
