Unit 61 Elk Hunt CO

I was lucky enough to get a unit 61 Muzzeloader elk tag this year. My quetsoin is for the others that have been lucky enough to draw the same tag or know the unit. Would you recommend hiring a outfitter in this area or is this a area that DIY is a good option? If I did go DIY I would be solo. I have done other DIY solo elk hunts and am in good shape so that should not be a problem. I do not have enough vacation to do a pre scout trip but I will be able to hunt the 9 days for the Muzzy season if needed.  But with the very limited chances of gitting another tag I would like some opinons form guys that have had the chance to hunt this unit things you would or would not do if you had the chance to hunt that area again.

Thank you,

It's obviously a choice you

It's obviously a choice you are going to make yourself, but you shouldn't have any difficulty finding elk on your own in 61. I think it depends partly on how picky you are going to be.There are also some outfitters that you can hire just to pack an animal out. That can make a difference if you are by yourself. A friend of mine has an archery tag this year and I am going to go with him to tag along, help call and hopefully pack out meat. I have done several scouting trips the last couple of years and will give you some info if you want to send a private message.

I had the same tag last year

I had the same tag last year and after 3 or 4 scoutting trips we changed our plans the night before the opening.  Odds are that the outfitters are booked for the seasons this late in the year, but if you want you can contact some and see if there are any openings.  For a outfitter you can plan on $5000+ for a 7 day hunt, but it is nice to have someone there that knows the area.

We hunted the area around Spruce Mountain and saw quite a few elk and had bulls bugleing down below us all the way in the bottom.  I ended up taking my bull a real old 5x6 at arond 6pm on the opening day and spent the next day packing him out.  My partner who was bow hunting got his on Sunday evening after we had packed mine out but he was around another 1/2 further down the hill.  He ran into a outfitter who he hired to pack out his elk.

If you are really thinking about a outfitter check out Garvey Brothers.  They have been in the area for years and run cattle in the unit.
