Hi everyone, I drew a tag for Unit 61 this year for deer. I scouted this unit this past 4 days, saw a lot of sign. I was near telephone Draw. Does anyone know about this area? Any help would be much appreciated. I live in Colorado but new to this area. Thanks for your help.
Congrats on the draw. I know it's a coveted tag for elk, so you should have some good eye candy while you are deer hunting ![]()
Not sure about the deer, but there are a couple of guys who will be able to help you out.
Welcome to the site!
Thanks. Supposed to be a lot of big bucks also. Looking forward to a great hunt. Can't wait. God I love hunting season. Will be chasing those elk soon with my bow.
From what I gather you are an archery hunter ? Were you looking around Telephone Trail ? If you are hunting archery or muzzy I would be heading higher and further south. ![]()

Hello, I just drew 61 buck and bear for 1st rifle; and have recently started to scout the area....seem to have figured out more or less where the bears are, but haven't seen any deer. Was wondering if you thought it was worth checking out that BLM land to the west with all the mining roads on it....I've hiked/4 wheeled around a good number of the trails off of Divide in the north part. (I'm from Montrose, so the stuff on the north end of the Uncompahgre is new to me.) I'm all for hiking in a few miles and tent camping. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm actually hunting 2nd season rifle, deer. I found a lot of sign but did not see a lot of deer. It was hot so I am sure they were up. Do you think this area will be good second season? Thanks for all of your help. Again, any info would be much appreciated. Thanks elkkill06
Well, it seems that we are a growing trend. We have been putting in for 2, 201 unit tags and have come to the realization that we will be in wheelchairs before we see a tag up there. Besides, the oufitting in the Great Divide area has thinned out the large numbers of quality bulls any how.
So, we put in for and got first season rifle bull tags for this year in 61. We've been doing a great deal of scouting, but are still fairly new to the area. We've been hunting the last 20 years in Unit 55 muzzle loader.
We have definitley seen the bears down there (we are from Grand Junction) and now we need to find the Elk. We've looked around the Tongue and Campbell Lake. What are the toughts about going further south? Is the bull hunting around Big Creek any good? I've also heard about going over toward Pine Mountain and Maverick...
We figure this is our year to try for the big bulls and then it's back to luck of the draw in archery and muzzle loader. This will be the first time in 17 years that I have hunted elk with a rifle.
Looking forward to the first part of October!!! Also looks like there will be a good group of people hunting in 61 this year.
Hope to get some good dialouge going.
Thanks for any help you might be able to provide...
