Unit 43 Elk

Hi, I'm new to the forum and man I'm glad I found this place. I will be down hunting Elk in Colorado this archery season and new to the area. I will be hunting unit 43 and was wondering if anyone had any information that would get me started where to look for elk. I'm looking at the wilderness areas for starters.

Thanks

Good thing you're looking at the wilderness areas, because it's at least half the unit, and the other half is really popular. There are all sorts of good trails you can take to get you up high. You're gonna want to be pretty close to timberline that time of year. There are good elk populations both on the outskirts of the wilderness, and way in deep. Are you backpacking or truck based?

Well, if you're willing and able, I'd be getting as far up Snowmass, Hunger or Willow Creek as possible. Heck, Rock Creek too. Take a look at Google, see which area you prefer, some are shallower and steeper than others.

RE: Unit 43

I live in Carbondale and have hiked a lot in 43 near Capital Lake and a few other places.  Last year I hunted across the valley in 444 on Basalt mountain and Thompson Creek with my Father in Law during archery season.  We heard a few cows and bulls, but didn't actually see them.  This year the plan is to go to 43 and see if we have any luck there.  We would really like to at least see some elk, if not get a shot off.  I couldn't find Hunger Creek, but did you mean Hunter, or am I just not finding the right one.  I also couldn't find rock creek.  Any other thoughts or suggestions would be great.  I am a traditional archer (so the chances of getting an elk are low) and am really just hunting for meat, so I won't be a drain on any bulls in the area.  Just excited to get out in a good place to get some action.

Thanks,

Aaron

Re: Unit 43

I have been doing my online research and have put together a map with a few of my ideas.  I was thinkin Sopris Creek or W Sopris Creak, anyone have any preferences as to which of these I should hunt for a good chance at a cow?
