Unit 40 Colorado 3rd Season Deer, First Post & Utah Elk Hunt pics

Hello to all,

Let me say first off what a great forum, I have been a lurker on here for last (2) months and can't take it any more.

I just got back from Utah on a buddys muzzy elk tag, I drew the tag in 2007 which he helped me on so it was my turn to pay him back. It was a great hunt, good year for elk in Utah (Manti), we ended up harvesting this bull on the 3rd day.

We now are getting geared up for our Colroado deer hunt, this will be the first hunt in Colorado for us, I was born in salt lake and raised in souther Idaho (not to far away....).

I have done allot of homework and received some information, (1) guy which is a member on this site which who gave me some good pointer's and couple of areas to look at. My buddy and I were hoping to continue the points game but his father is part of the hunt and due to age and tired of the points game we decided to try and draw. I wished I would of looked closer at the amount of private land this unit has.

What are the potentials for this unit? We are not big trouphy hunters, with that said with all the time and moeney spent for this hunt it would be nice to see quality animals.

I will post some pictures when we return.

Take care

Welcome to the site, it is

Welcome to the site, it is always nice to see more hunters and talking with them. Very nice photos of the bull. Also very cool how you and your buddy helped each other out on the ML hunts. As for unit 40, I have not hunted it but I have been thru the area and there are some nice bucks in the area. You can go to the DOW web site look up hunting, then statistics. It will give you an idea of how many tags sold, hunters, harvest for the last few years for each season and how many where bucks or does. Good luck on the hunt and let us know how it goes.

Deer all over the place!

First of all, great to see you posting rather than lurking.  It's a really great forum and lots of good info has been shared with me.  Hope your experience is as good as mine so far.

Congrats on a fine bull and great hunt with your buddy too.  It's great to hunt with good friends.  In fact, it's really one of the best parts of the hunt for me.

Just got back from an elk hunt in unit 40.  Although I was hunting on an RFW ranch (Pinon Mesa), we camped in the national forest.  We saw deer, lots of deer, everywhere.  They were on public land, private land and pretty much everywhere we looked.  Many nice mulie bucks too.  You should be able to find good deer hunting on the public ground.

I'd also agree with the suggestion of look up the number of tags for this deer season.  I don't know what the hunting pressure is and if the deer will be highly pressured during 2nd rifle or not.  If they are pushed, they might end up on the private ground--don't really know.

And don't forget to post the results of your hunt and some pics for the rest of us to enjoy!
