Unit 40 Colorado

I am new to BGH!!! So hello everyone, I put in for unit 40 for a cow tag for the First Rifle season and was wondering if I would have a good oppertunity at getting a Cow. I am 15 years old and am extremely excited to get out in the woods if I draw a tag. It would be very appriciated if I could get a little info on how the unit is for elk. I will Scout the unit with my dad when I find out if I draw. Any info on where to start scouting would be very appriciated!!!

Re: Unit 40 Colorado

Welcome to BGH. It's a great elk unit, but they issue too many cow tags during the regular rifle seasons in my opinion. There is just 12 square miles of Forest Service, surrounded by private at the higher elevations, but the canyons are almost all BLM. The elk will likely be back on forest service land for opening morning, but they won't be there for long after the shooting starts. So focus your scouting on a likely place to either find them opening morning and or a place to cut off their escape to private lands. Then get to know the BLM canyons to the south, east and west of the Forest Service lands. This is Elkkill06's back yard, so he might have some other ideas for you.

You should also consider applying for the Hunter Outreach elk, deer and antelope hunts if you've never taken an elk before.

The Huntmasters have access to several RFW properties and some other nice ranches to conduct youth hunts on.

Also if you havent filled that youth tag by the end of the regular season it can be converted to a late season tag so you can hunt over christmas break in most northwest units and unit 64 near Montrose. The more snow the better for those late hunts ,my daughters have filled a couple youth tags that way. Good luck and have fun!!
