I haven't hunted unti 30 in 4

I haven't hunted unti 30 in 4 or 5 years, but I've been hunting there since I was 13(1971).

One of the biggest "tricks" is "walking". If you get off the 4 wheeler/out of the truck, you'lll see deer/sheep. Sheep are fewer and farther between. For sheep, I would try towards the end of the south rim road. For deer, almost anywhere between the south rim road and the rim. Get a map and find water. Maybe take a hike off behind kyrkundyle(spelling?), never can spell that name, and or look for the man made wildlife watering hole, built by some local Carlsbad hunters....

Or, maybe take a hike down along the rim from where the rim road first gets close to the rim, just before hoppers tank.

The north rim is good too, but usually a butload of people, and a ton of "road hunters", the term hunters used loosely there.

Theses last spots are a secret, so don't tell anyone. lol

No really, I don't have my maps close by so this may be a little vague. Shortly after turning onto the south rim road, you will come to "Cougar" road. Turn left. If you take the first left it goes to a windmill. Park at the windmill and walk back towards highway 137. Or take the 3rd(IIRC) left off of Cougar road, the raod begins with a barbwire gate next to a big tree, and goes back in towards Queen with a windmill about halfway through.

I've had good luck all over the area over the years, but these are my hot spots.

Carry a map, compass, GPS, water, and a snake bite kit. And tell someone where you'll be.

Huge deer in that area...no doubt

rainfall totals in that area arent off as bad as some others , Im going in there Oct 20-24 Muzzlegun hunt actually plan to get in there one day early which is all the law here allows...thing is...while its best to chase the Mulies....a pop up blind in a real fine deer trail (off est trail) can work well if a lot of hunters are pushin the deer around...also you can get a landowner card, have a farmer sign it....hunt in his corn field....biggest buck in US last year came from Unit 32 like that (landowner hunter participation card/form) and it was actually a worse drought in southern New Mexico than this was...the deer have water,,,,the rain is about growing forage feed and antlers... Im looking for a 6x6 care less of the spread but a big 5x5.... probably take it...all about a big Old buck with me...all the best and good hunting
